CUL Digital Collections: New Items in May 2015

In May 2015, SMU’s Central University Libraries uploaded 460 items into CUL Digital Collections. CUL now has approximately 47,753 published items.

Highlights include:

99 Texas railroad negatives, 1939-1976, from the Everett L. DeGolyer Jr. Collection of United States Railroad Photographs as part of the Texas Treasures FY2015 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Locations include Brownsville, Bryan, Commerce, Corsicana, Dallas, Denison, El Paso, Ennis, Fort Worth, Galveston, Hempstead, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, McKinney, Mexia, Moscow, Nacogdoches, Paisano, San Antonio, Sherman, and Waco, Texas.

307 drawings from the Potter Art Iron Studios Collection. There were 50 drawings from Box 16, 57 drawings from Box 17, 50 drawings from Box 18, 75 drawings from Box 21, and 75 drawings from Box 22. These drawings mainly show fire screens and fireplace tool sets, as well as light fixtures, including chandeliers, pendant lights, flush and semi-flush mounted lights, sconces, and lamps. Two unique items are pot cranes for hanging a cooking pot in the fireplace.

Views of Mexico. Locations include Guanajuato, Veracruz-Llave, Queretaro, Guadalajara, Jalisco, and Puebla. Subjects include tropical scenery, dams, city streets, military buildings, the aqueduct of Queretaro, Juanacatlan Falls, cathedrals, gardens, plazas, and fountains.

12 cartes de visite, ca. 1875, from Portraits and People of Mexico that show a bread distributor, fisherman, public writer, ironer, and sellers of fried food, wooden bowls, mats, hens, newspapers, charcoal and sieves.

17 stereoviews from Stereographs of Mexico. Images include the volcano Popocatepetl and its environs, as well as Puebla and Mexico City, including municipal buildings and landmarks.

5 stereoviews from the Collection of Texas Stereographs, including two genre views, ca. 1890s; Senator Joseph W. Bailey, 1898; the San Jose Mission, 1937; and Austin, 1931.

Two Civil War collection items: Destruction of a Railroad Bridge, ca. 1861-1865, from the Collection of Civil War Era Stereographs and Genl Magruder from the Collection of Civil War and Military Cartes de Visite and Portraits.

7 SMU basketball programs from the 1950s, including games against Wisconsin, Kansas, Rice, TCU, and Baylor, as well as the NCAA Championship.

[The ‘Dinkey’ Streetcar], ca. 1916. The ‘Dinkey’ streetcar operated between downtown Dallas and Southern Methodist University from 1915-1920. This photograph was taken by Cora Lee Waggoner, a student and Tri Delta at SMU from 1915 to 1916.
