SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: August 2021

In August 2021, SMU Libraries uploaded 163 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

69 real photographic postcards, ca. 1913-1914, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. These images show scenes from the Decena Trágica and its aftermath. Included are images of Federal soldiers and Felicista revolutionaries fighting in the streets of Mexico City, bombarded buildings and streets, military equipment and uniforms, generals and other military officials, and the people of Mexico City who witnessed the battle.

6 interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Cora Hawkins, Erica Kennard, Lezly Murphy, Elie Nabushosi, Sameer Paroo, and Jennifer Torres-Quintanilla are part of the Voices of SMU project.

70 photographs from the Collection of Photographs of People Reading or with Books collection. These early photographs, including daguerreotypes and ambrotypes, feature men, women, and children in photo studios posed beside or holding reading materials.

1 video, 1968, from the Frank Duane Rosengren Collection of Hemisfair Materials. This promotional video, which features Texas Governor John Connally, promotes the world’s fair HemisFair ’68 in San Antonio, Texas.

Now available in SMU Scholar: Volume 7 and Volume 8 of Field and Laboratory (1939-1940). This publication contains papers published by faculty, students, and alumni from SMU’s Science Division, from 1932-1959. The articles cover many scientific areas, including biology, chemistry, physics, meteorology, earth sciences, anthropology, and the history of science.

7 folders of letters, 1840-1896, from the Holloway Family Papers. The letters include a variety of daily life topics about her thoughts and family.

8 photographs, October 21 – November 2, 1974, from the Stanley Marcus Papers. These images feature renowned Japanese fashion designer Hanae Mori and her designs, as well as members of the Japanese delegation who visited the 1974 Japan Fortnight event at Neiman Marcus, including the Consul General and his wife.

2 stereographs, ca. 1868 and 1874. One stereoview by Alexander Gardner shows three men and their horses on the bluffs near Fort Laramie and the other, attributed to Timothy Sullivan, is a scenic view of the Snake River in Idaho.
