SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: June 2021

In June 2021, SMU Libraries uploaded 457 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

362 real photographic postcards, ca. 1872-1940s, from the John Miller Morris Real Photographic Postcards and Photographs of Texas collection. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number TXT-21010). (2021). These images feature scenes from across Texas, including Bracketville, Lampasas, Falfurrias, Gainesville, and numerous other towns and locations throughout the state.

4 interviews have been added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Veree Hawkins BrownTonya CampbellRachel Gan, and Brandi McLeain are part of the Voices of SMU project.

51 negatives, 1949-1967, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. These images were taken in California, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and Nevada, and include photographs of landscapes, train stations, and railway signs. A particularly striking set of photographs shows an elevated view of Cold Stream Canyon, which Steinheimer called “perhaps the finest place in the Sierra (Mountains) to photograph trains.”

30 real photographic postcards, ca. 1913-1914, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. These photographs show scenes from the Decena Tragica and its aftermath. Included are images of Federal soldiers and Felicista revolutionaries fighting in the streets of Mexico City, bombarded buildings and streets, military equipment and uniforms, generals and other military officials, and the people of Mexico City who witnessed the battle. (Some of these items contain graphic content that may be upsetting to some users, and viewer discretion is advised.)

4 items, ca. 1866-1884, from the W. Henry Brown New Mexico Stereographs collection depicting ruined buildings, construction of a cathedral, adobe buildings in Taos, and a street scene from the mid-19th century in New Mexico.

2 film rolls, ca. 1937-1941, from the Isabel T. Kelly Ethnographic Archive. These rolls were taken by Bertha B. Harris in Mexico and feature images of homes, churches, cemeteries, and more. Roll 002 also contains images of the El Tajin site, a pre-Columbian archeological site in Veracruz.
