CUL Digital Collections Update: October 2016

In October 2016, SMU’s Central University Libraries uploaded 328 items into CUL Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

41 items from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection as part of the TexTreasures FY2017 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This month’s set depicts the Texas Centennial, 1936; including photographs of Shirley Temple; Ginger Rogers; Tommy Dorsey; the Governor of New Jersey; Phimister Proctor, a well-known equestrian sculptor of his day; and several dinosaur statutes.

128 photographs from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. Highlights include photographs by Cal Osborn, Jose Maria Guillen, and Yanez y Guillen. Many of the photographs show fighting along the US-Mexico border in the town of Agua Prieta, Federalists in Mazatlán, and Constitutionalists in Guaymas.

25 programs for performances at the Little Theatre of Dalles, 1923-1927, from the Mary McCord-Edyth Renshaw Collection of the Performing Arts.

10 issues of Hoofprint, an SMU student magazine published from 1952 to 1954 that contains news articles, short stories, humor pieces, and illustrations.

13 stereographs  from the Banks McLaurin, Jr. Stereograph Collection set in Turkey ca. 1900-1920s, highlighting natural and man-made attractions in and around Constantinople (now Instabul), such as the Golden Horn and the Hagia Sophia.

The Kessler City Plan for Dallas, a 1925 summary and exposition of the recommendations of George E. Kessler, author of a City Plan for Dallas, written by Louis P. Head and reprinted from the Dallas Morning News.

Highlights include an interview recorded ca. May 19-21, 1971 with a young Roger Staubach. In the ca. May 22-25, 1971, Part 2 video, the dedication of the new Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library and Museum in Austin is covered. Richard Nixon, Spiro Agnew, LBJ, and Lady Bird Johnson are in attendance. Mayor R. M. “Sharkey” Stovall of Fort Worth is featured in the ca. May 1-2, 1971 and ca. June 17, 1971 videos. Governor of Alabama, presidential candidate and segregationist, George Wallace, appears in the ca. May 7-8, 1971 video. Attorney General in the Nixon administration, John Mitchell, is seen in the ca. April 30, 1971 video.
