SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: May 2022

In May 2022, SMU Libraries uploaded 502 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

212 images, ca. 1905-1941, from the John Miller Morris Real Photograph Postcards and Photographs of Texas. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number TXT-22001). (2022). The postcards feature images of central and north central Texas in the counties of Hamilton, Lampasas, San Saba, Travis, and others. Depicted are images of rivers, landscapes, prominent buildings, farms and farmers, parade floats, and more.

4 interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Kenitra Brown, Elizabeth Dominguez, Erika Fadel, and Albert Lin are part of the Voices of SMU project.

100 images, 1946-1955, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. These images, many of which were taken early in Steinheimer’s career, show Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and other locomotives in various locations throughout California, Arizona, and Nevada. A number of the photographs were taken outside of Steinheimer’s childhood home in Glendale, California.

35 documents, ca. 1981, from Record of Lots Completion and Shipment Construction Department, P.P.C. Co. This collection of photocopies contains the Pullman Palace Car Company’s record of lots and construction lists arranged alphabetically by railroad and by lot number, as well as the company’s record of lots from Chicago and Detroit.

51 issues of the SMU News Digest, 1938-1949, from the Southern Methodist University Publications and Media Collection. Highlights include issues covering Dr. Umphrey Lee’s inauguration as SMU’s president, extensive coverage of the dedication of Fondren Library, and a special ”National Defense Issue” published during World War II.

9 issues of The Campus, the Southern Methodist University Bulletin, and 1 publication entitled “Methodism’s Greatest Opportunity and the Best Unoccupied Territory”, 1912-1914, from the the Southern Methodist University Publications collection. These publications were distributed to raise funds for the initial opening of the university.

22 real photographic postcards, ca. 1911-1916, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. Included are images of Federal and Maderista soldiers, featuring soldiers of General Lucio Blanco’s army, General Victoriano Huerta’s army, General Serafin Mercado Monroy’s army, and various other forces. Most images are from Chihuahua City and nearby areas.

13 issues of The Dinkey, 1916-1929, from the Southern Methodist University Student Newspapers collection. The Dinkey was the April Fool’s Day issue of the student newspaper.

34 albums, letters, scrapbooks, and other items, part of the exhibit “Send Me a Postcard! Women on the Road across 19th-20th Century America” currently on display online and in Hillcrest Hall at DeGolyer Library, were added to multiple digital collections. Highlights include the dime novel Automobile Lillian: The Daring Girl Bandit of Arizona and two travel scrapbooks kept by Margaret Burkhalder and Marion K. Fenn on their respective travels in the U.S. and Mexico.

3 items from the Diane Wisdom papers, which include two records and the album cover for Ray Anthony’s Bookend Revue.

18 documents, 1838-1893, from the Alfred D. Parks Papers collection. These documents include deeds, contracts, land surveys, and invitations, as well as several notes granting Alfred D. Parks license to preach at several churches in Nacogdoches County, Texas.
