SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: April 2022

In April 2022, SMU Libraries uploaded 537 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

191 images, ca. 1902-1950s, from the John Miller Morris Real Photograph Postcards and Photographs of Texas. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number TXT-22001). (2022). The postcards include images of locations across Texas, from the Gulf Coast to the Hill Country, and feature prominent buildings, views of beachgoers in several Texas beach towns, and more.

6 interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews with Shahreen Abedin, Quynh-Chi Dang, Rolando Leal, Bhupendra V. Patel, Jaynish Patel, and Yuanyuan “Yoyo” Wu are part of the Voices of SMU project.

29 postcards, ca. 1905-1908, from the Elise Hay Golden Family Postcards and Letters, 1900s-1990s. These postcards, which are largely addressed to Elise Hay, were sent from various locations and depict images from Arkansas to England, as well as several illustrations. Several postcards were sent from the Denver area, including one which features an image of the Cathedral Spires in the Garden of the Gods.

Sanger, Texas to Soap Lake, Washington Travel Scrapbook, 1940, a scrapbook created by Mrs. Joseph Coppinger detailing her and her husband’s two-week journey from Sanger, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest. Postcards, road maps, photographs, souvenir pamphlets, and pennants are included.

7 photographs, ca. 1942-1943, from the Kenneth Smith Collection of Photographs and Postcards. Among these photographs are images of the United States Fifth Army, which was stationed in North Africa during World War II, and their journey by train through the area.

Automobile trip through Mexico, 1911, an album of photographs from Cy E. Johnson’s automobile trip through Mexico with a female companion.

Tour of all Mexico, 1909, a scrapbook kept by Leonora D. Nelson that includes the itinerary, railroad map, menus, passenger list, clippings relating to people and places seen on the luxury tour, with photographs recording the tour group and activities.

Western travel scrapbook, 1940, kept by Mrs. Lewis I. Aberle and containing many photographs of tourist sites and indigenous peoples, postcards, clippings, menus and other ephemera.

Western travel album from Wellesley, Massachusetts to San Diego, California, 1910-1911, a scrapbook kept by Evelyn Jessup Post and featuring photographs, telegrams, postcards, brochures, souvenir programs, theater, opera and song recital programs, telegrams, letters and notes.

50 negatives, 1946-1963, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. These images were taken primarily in the Los Angeles area and feature scenes of railroad depots, orange groves, and a number of Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, and Union Pacific locomotives. One particularly striking image shows a Western Pacific freight train transporting automobiles over a bridge near Keddie, California.

9 drawings, 1915-ca. 1945, from the Jan Kirsten Papers and Collection of Locomotive Drawings, 1900s-1970. These drawings include locomotive and general parts arrangements for Union Pacific Railroad Company, Western Pacific Railroad Company Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Company, and others.

3 maps, 1918-ca. 1945, from the Everette Lee DeGolyer, Sr. Papers. Among these maps are a geologic survey of Northeastern Mexico and two maps of Veracruz showing properties belonging to Mexico Co. and locations related to the petroleum industry.

74 items, ca. 1959-2019, from the Diane Wisdom Papers collection. These items feature photographs from the height of her career and her later career, which was marked by international travel and the company of musical luminaries and Las Vegas celebrities.

Now available in SMU Scholar: Volumes 19-27 of Field and Laboratory (1951-1959). This publication contains papers published by faculty, students, and alumni from SMU’s Science Division, from 1932-1959. The articles cover many scientific areas, including biology, chemistry, physics, meteorology, earth sciences, anthropology, and the history of science.

163 photographs, 1912-1913, from Hardinge Bridge Construction, India. These photographs detail various steps of the construction of the Hardinge Bridge in what is now Paksey, Bangladesh. Highlights include group portraits of some of the staff departments taken at or near the end of the project.

16 videos, 1970, from the WFAA Newsfilm Collection, ca. 1960-1978 have been updated with annotations, which include information about the individual clips shown within each video.
