SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: September 2021

In September 2021, SMU Libraries uploaded 410 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

54 postcards, ca. 1913-1917, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. These images show scenes from the Decena Trágica and its aftermath. Included are portraits of Mexican Federal officials and generals, images of Federal soldiers and Felicista revolutionaries fighting in the streets of Mexico City, bombarded buildings and streets, interior views of damaged buildings, military equipment and uniforms, and images of the people of Mexico City who witnessed the battle.

34 documents, 1941-1946, from the John C. Cox, Jr. World War II Papers collection. These items include several letters written by John C. Cox while stationed in the Philippines, military forms pertaining to John C. Cox., pamphlets from the 27th annual Convocation of SMU’s graduation ceremony, and newspaper clippings.

29 photographs, ca. 1860s-1918, from the Lawrence T. Jones III Texas Photography Collection. Among these images are portrait photographs taken by various Texas photography studios, views throughout the state, and a number of images and documents relating to Texas photographers. Of particular interest is a photograph of the Henry Miller traveling photography gallery and a posed image of a photographer and his subject.

4 interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Nayelly Dominguez, Julius Mwangi, Quynh Tho Pham, and Patricia Segovia are part of the Voices of SMU project.

220 letters, 1861-1905, from the Rosa Bonheur Correspondence collection. Most of the letters, written in French, were from the painter Rosa Bonheur to Paul Chardin, but also included are letters to and from other artists and associates, including Isafore Bonheur, Jeanne Micas, Hippolyte Peyrol, and others. A number of the items contain illustrations, including a humorous drawing of two men fending off a deer, which accompanied a letter from Rosa Bonheur to Paul Chardin written in 1870.

53 photographs, letters, articles, and advertising materials, 1913-1974, from the Stanley Marcus Papers collection. These items include assorted materials related to the 1957 French Fortnight, which brought French dignitaries and couture to Dallas for the first of the lavish events which ran annually for 30 years, and three photographs of Carrie Marcus Neiman, one of the co-founders and a former president of the Neiman Marcus.

15 drawings, 1884-1912, from the Collection of Baldwin Locomotive Works Records. Among these are erecting card drawings for White Pass and Yukon, Lehigh and Hudson, Gilmore and Pittsburgh, as well as several foreign railroads. Also included are a number of detail drawings for tender trucks and cabs for Grand Trunk Railway.

Now available in SMU Scholar: Volume 9 and Volume 10 of Field and Laboratory (1939-1940). This publication contains papers published by faculty, students, and alumni from SMU’s Science Division, from 1932-1959. The articles cover many scientific areas, including biology, chemistry, physics, meteorology, earth sciences, anthropology, and the history of science.

1 volume, 1899-1904, from the Collection of Baldwin Locomotive Works Records. This junior law book contains shop rules for building specific parts of a locomotive. An alphabetical index of parts with corresponding page numbers is listed at the beginning of the volume.
