SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: April 2021

In April 2021, SMU Libraries uploaded 298 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

192 real photographic postcards, ca. 1896-1892, from the John Miller Morris Real Photographic Postcards and Photographs of Texas collection. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number TXT-21010). (2021). These postcards feature images from across Texas, including towns such as Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Longview, Matagorda, Port Arthur, and many others. Of particular note are several images of or relating to the 1915 flood in Port Arthur, including a photograph of four men standing in shoulder-deep water on a street corner.

4 interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Dr. Kevin Lias, Marc Patrick, Ailey Pope, and Brianna Rollins are part of the Voices of SMU project.

30 real photographic postcards, ca. 1913-1914, from Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. These images show scenes from the Decena Tragica and its aftermath (note: some are graphic). Included are images of Federal soldiers and Felicista revolutionaries fighting in the streets of Mexico City, bombarded buildings and streets, military equipment and uniforms, generals and other military officials, and the people of Mexico City who witnessed the battle.

1 roll of film negatives, ca. 1937-1941, from the Isabel T. Kelly Ethnographic Archive. The images in this roll were taken by Bertha B. Harris in Mexico.

42 items, one folder and 41 individual photographs, from the Bywaters Special Collections: Texas Artists Archives collection. Highlights include a number of photographs and postcards of the Navajo people and two photographs of a statue of Jose Antonio Navarro designed by artist Allie Tennant.

15 photographs, mostly of indigenous people in traditional dress, from the Collection of PIX photographs of Mexico. Highlights include an image of a man in a plumed headdress and  a woman in an elaborately embroidered dress which the caption indicates she embroidered herself.

12 folders of press releases, covering all or part of the years 1958-1962, from the Texas Instruments Records Collection. These cover events such as acquisitions and mergers, promotions, new hires, and product announcements, as well as financial reports for the company.

1 diary, 1940, from Sir Ellice Victor Elias Sassoon Papers and Photographs. This handwritten diary contains daily records of Sir Sassoon’s life in 1940 and includes newspaper clippings and a number of personal photographs.
