SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: March 2020

In March 2020, SMU Libraries uploaded 204 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

74 photographs and pamphlets, 1885-1953. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number TXT-20008). (2020). These items include course catalogs for schools, informational materials about various clubs and organizations, and images of a number of towns across Texas. One image shows a man standing in front of a produce display at the Hemphill County Fair around 1920.

9 volumes/issues from The Record, Dallas Archeological Society. These issues, published from the late 1980s through 2006, detail a variety of Texas archaeological finds and day-to-day business of the Society and its members.

Naples and Mt. Vesuvius eruption, 1944, DeGolyer Library, SMU.

40 photographs, 1944-1945, from  Melvin C. Shaffer World War II Photographs. The images were primarily taken during the time Melvin Shaffer was assigned to the 15th Medical General Laboratory in Naples, Italy, as part of the Medical and Museum Arts Services (MAMAS). Notable images from the Italy material include the 1944 eruption of Vesuvius taken at night, the Cupola at the Pontificio Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario di Pompei, and several scenes in the Italian Alps.

3 ration books, 1942-1943, from the J. Erik Jonsson Papers. These ration books were issued during WWII to J. Erik Jonsson, his wife, and his five year-old daughter.

15 images, ca. 1902-1966, from the Isabel T. Kelly Ethnographic Archive. Included among these are negatives of photographs taken in Mexico and Pakistan, as well as several hand-drawn maps of Mexico and the Western U.S. Southern Paiute Indian area of Utah. Of particular interest are several negatives taken by Gabriel Ospina of the El Tajin site in Mexico, which include images of the Pyramid of the Niches.

D Day Finds News-Radio Ready for Event, June 14, 1944, DeGolyer Library, SMU.

4 photographs, 1940-1954, from the Belo Records, 1842-2007. Among these images are a portrait photograph of Commander Sam Dealey, nephew of George B. Dealey; a U.S. Navy warship named after Commander Dealey in Boston; a photograph of Dallas Morning News employees registering for the draft; and a photograph of news outlets preparing for reporting on D-Day.

4 interviews from Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects. These interviews, with Quinton Crenshaw, David Huntley, Jaywin Malhi, and Charis Rodgers are part of the Voices of SMU project.

[Ray Charles], November 1, 1974, DeGolyer Library, SMU.
50 photographs from the the Andy Hanson Photographs and Papers, circa 1955-2008 collection. These images are primarily portraits of notable celebrities such as Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Katherine Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor, along with Dallas luminaries like Robert and Nancy Dedman and Stanley Marcus.
