SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: November 2018

In November 2018, SMU Libraries uploaded 404 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

188 notes, ca. 1882-1929, from the Rowe-Barr Collection of Texas Currency, as part of the TexTreasures FY2019 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

These notes are U. S. national currency that were printed following the U. S. Civil War and up to the Great Depression and issued from chartered national banks in Texas. Cities represented range from Abilene to Daingerfield and include the signatures of local bank presidents and cashiers. The various series of notes include decorative vignettes, portraits of Presidents and other notable figures, depictions of scenes in American history, and ornate designs.

3 oral histories have been added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These videos are part of the Latinx History at SMU series: René Martinez, Delia Jasso, and Jake Torres.

5 photographs from the Southern Methodist University Campus Memories collection. These photographs, four of which were included in the 1954 Rotunda yearbook, depict students working in the offices of SMU publications and a photograph of a young man reading the Daily Campus story about the Nixon scandal.

29 photographs, ca. 1942 to 1960s, from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection. These images, taken at Crozier Technical High School, show students and instructors in various classes, including woodworking, printing, chemistry, and nursing, among others. One particularly striking image depicts two students, one male and one female, working at anvils during a metalworking class.

32 images, ca. 1960 to 2006, from the Collection of Photographs by Andy Hanson. Among these images are a number of events relating to or hosted by The Arts Community Alliance, or TACA, including planning meetings, galas and balls, art expositions, and more. Also included are several images of Pat and Richard Nixon in a parade in Dallas and portrait photographs of Oscar de la Renta.

99 negatives, ca. 1850s to 1935, from the Collection of Dallas Morning News Negatives and Copy Photographs. These images show views of Dallas in the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries, including the streetcar and interurban systems, Dallas buildings and roadways, and boats on the Trinity River. Other images illustrate the significant impact of the 1908 flood in Dallas, during which many areas of the city, including railway tracks, were overrun with floodwaters.

34 photographs, ca. 1880-1897, by Alfred Briquet, from the [Collection of Alfred Briquet Views of Mexico and the Caribbean]. Among these images are views of the Vigal Canal and Constitution Square in Mexico City, as well as several photographs of harbors in the Caribbean.

Bridwell Library exhibitions:

The Pietists historical materials illustrate the theological and geographic diversity of the Pietist movement during its period of greatest influence, from the late seventeenth century until the early nineteenth century. On view now in The Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries.

The Uniting Conference of 1968 and the Birth of The United Methodist Church commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of The United Methodist Church. On view now in the Entry Hall through December 7, 2018.
