SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: October 2018

In October 2018, SMU Libraries uploaded 156 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

4 oral histories have been added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. This month’s uploads are the first three videos in the Latinx History at SMU series: Reverend Paul Barton, Erik Burgos, and Reverend Isabel Chabelo Gomez, as well as another oral history interview in the Black History at SMU series with Vivian Rutledge.

62 images, ca. 1880, from the Jack and Beverly Wilgus History of Photography Collection. These images, part of the Roma album, showcase attractions and landmarks throughout Rome, including views of the city and its inhabitants, noteworthy buildings, and historic churches. St. Peter’s Square and Basilica and other Vatican City landmarks feature heavily.

3 photographs, ca. 1880-1905, from the Everett L. DeGolyer Jr. Collection of United States Railroad Photographs. Images include the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company No. 137 locomotive, Colorado-Midland Railway Company locomotives 23 and 8, and an American Institute of Mining Engineers special train.

18 photographs from the [Collection of general photographs of Mexico]. These photographs, from the late 19^th century, primarily focus on the people and scenery of the Tepic area.

6 drawings, 1885-1911, from the Collection of Baldwin Locomotive Works. Among these drawings are erecting card drawings for White Pass and Yukon Railway, the Carpenter-O’Brien Lumber Company, and J.G. Jackson, and detail drawings for East Broad Top Railroad and Coal and Kinston Manufacturing.

33 negatives by Richard Steinheimer, taken between 1962 and 1970, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. These images include photographs taken on a snowy night in Dunsmuir, California, as well as a number of views at and around Niles Tower in Fremont, California, during the passage of the last California Zephyr locomotive.

1 pamphlet, 1911, detailing the many uses of the railroad ditcher manufactured by American Hoist and Derrick Company, including pile driver, rail loader, coal handler, and more.

17 handbooks, 1936-1960, were added to the Southern Methodist University Publications and Media Collection. These booklets, known as “M books,” were produced by the YMCA and YWCA and were given to students at the beginning of each school year and contain information about the SMU campus, a variety of activities campus-wide, student associations, and more.

1 negative, 1905, from the Collection of U.S. Railroad Negatives, featuring an image of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company No. 137 locomotive in Glorieta, New Mexico.

10 glass plate negatives, taken in June, 1924, from the Jules A. Bourquin Photographs collection.  These images showcase Bourquin’s Colorado home, Stoneleigh, including images of the interior of the home and striking views of nearby mountains.

1 postcard, ca. 1910-1920 by Agustin Casasola, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on the Mexican Revolution. This postcard features a group portrait of General Macias and several of his soldiers posing with weapons.

Bridwell Library Exhibitions:

The Pietists historical materials illustrate the theological and geographic diversity of the Pietist movement during its period of greatest influence, from the late seventeenth century until the early nineteenth century. On view now in The Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries.

The Uniting Conference of 1968 and the Birth of The United Methodist Church commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of The United Methodist Church. On view now in the Entry Hall through December 7, 2018.
