CUL Digital Collections Update: June 2016

In June 2016, SMU’s Central University Libraries uploaded 230 items into CUL Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

43 items from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection as part of the TexTreasures FY2016 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The items include scenes of daily life in towns outside of Dallas. A few highlights include street food vendors in San Antonio; several images of railroad stations, depots, and railroad yards located in Wichita Falls, Temple, Waco, and Somerville; two images of Wootan Wells, a former health resort/town that no longer exists; and various images of the Alamo and Alamo Plaza.

6 issues of El Burro de d. Simplicio, a weekly political newspaper from the Mexican state of Tlaxcala and 3 issues of La Pata de Cabra, a Mexico City daily political and literary journal “dedicated to the people.”

Index of Companies Construction Numbers (2 volumes) from the Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1883-1956. These construction indices, arranged by Baldwin Locomotive Works construction number and date, list the purchaser of the locomotive and wheel arrangement.

30 company magazines published by and for the employees of the Roxana Petroleum Company, 1918-1920, detailing company developments, as well as the company’s contribution to the World War I effort. As time progressed, the publication became more political in nature, publishing articles that discuss Communism, capitalism, and other political and economic issues relating to the oil industry.

Police Signal Telegraphs: The Gamewell Fire Alarm Telegraph Company, New York, a catalog of various police and fire alarm telegraphs made available by the Gamewell Fire Alarm Telegraph Company, ca. 1894.

24 videos from WFAA Newsfilm, 1960-1978, containing news clips and a- and b-roll footage from the Dallas ABC Television station covering March-May 1970.

35 photographs and postcards from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution: 13 photographs feature Revolutionary Gen. Pablo Gonzalez Garza, who ran against Venustiano Carranza for the Mexican presidency in 1919; 22 postcards are by noted Mexican photographer Yanez.

16 programs from the Mary McCord-Edyth Renshaw Collection of the Performing Arts for Little Theatre of Dallas performances, 1921-1940.

19 photographs and documents from the Stanley Marcus Papers, including correspondence between an interior decoration firm, Stanley Marcus and the artist Harry Bertoia, as well as photographs documenting planned art installations at NorthPark’s Neiman Marcus store. Also of note are the architectural drawings for the construction of the NorthPark Neiman Marcus store.
