CUL Digital Collections Update: May 2016

In May 2016, SMU’s Central University Libraries uploaded 200 items into CUL Digital Collections. CUL now has 52,319 published items.

Highlights include:

167 items from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection as part of the TexTreasures FY2016 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Included were views depicting the cotton and oil industries and the Alamo, as well as landmark buildings from around the state. Of additional interest were postcards depicting planting at a Japanese Rice Farm situated near Houston and the performer Julius Behre, a vaudeville performer who was both a comedian and contortionist.

8 photographs from the Everett L. DeGolyer Jr. Collection of United States Railroad Photographs featuring the Aeolus steam locomotives, which were streamlined by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company to serve as backups for Zephyr diesel locomotives.

9 photographs from the Carleton E. Watkins Photographs, ca. 1869-1885. The photographs show the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California; the Southern Pacific Railroad at the Tehachapi Loop; the Yosemite Valley; the Oakland Ferry; Mt. Hood from The Dalles, and more.
