CUL Digital Collections Update: April 2016

In April 2016, SMU’s Central University Libraries uploaded 313 items into CUL Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

119 items from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection as part of the TexTreasures FY2016 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Most of the items are postcard views of Dallas, including celebrities, advertisements, and political materials. Specific items are views of Highland Park residences, the 1908 Trinity River Flood, actress Sarah Bernhardt, aviatrix Matilde Moisant, and the Dallas Giants, who played in the Texas League.

47 photographs and ephemera from the Stanley Marcus Papers. Highlights include portrait photographs of Stanley Marcus and his family; advertisements and catalog pages; photographs with celebrities including Sophia Loren, Phyllis Diller, and Brigitte Bardot; and the membership list, menu, and a photograph from a Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin dinner held at The Old Warsaw in 1957.

8 engineering drawings from the Collection of Baldwin Locomotive Works. Railroads include the Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway; Saint Louis Southwestern Railway; Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad; New Orleans Terminal Railway; Oeste de Minas Railroad; and Lima Northern Railway.

3 programs relating to the laying of the cornerstone and subsequent dedication of SMU’s Fondren Library: Laying of the Corner Stone, The Fondren Library, June 6, 1939; Dedication, The Fondren Library, June 6, 1940; and Dedication Proceedings, The Fondren Library, June 6, 1940.

59 photographs from the album, Ten Tragic Days (La Decena Tragica), which took place during the Mexican Revolution in Mexico City, February 9-19, 1913. The events culminated in the assassination of President Francisco I. Madero and his Vice President, José María Pino Suárez. Most of the photographs were taken by Manuel Ramos and several were taken by Charles Waite.

23 items from the Hervey A. Priddy Collection of American Presidential and Political Memorabilia, including inauguration medals and badges from Calvin Coolidge through Lyndon Baines Johnson. One unique item, [Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ‘Metropolitan Police’ Inauguration Badge], was worn by attendees to the inauguration. Each badge had a specific number which allowed its wearer into the inaugural festivities.

11 videos from the WFAA Newsfilm, 1960-1978, collection held by the G. William Jones Film and Video Collection. The physical collection comprises some 3,000 film reels that contain news clips and b-roll footage from the Dallas ABC Television station, WFAA, ca. 1960-1978. The videos cover January-February, 1970.
