CUL Digital Collections Update: October 2015

In October 2015, SMU’s Central University Libraries uploaded 564 items into CUL Digital Collections. CUL now has approximately 49,644 published items.

Highlights include:

107 postcards of Dallas, 1904-1959, from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection as part of the Texas Treasures FY2016 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Many of the postcards show buildings and houses within Dallas and Highland Park. Other highlights include the Dallas Marching Band, 1911; Chase, a flight instructor at Dallas Love Field, standing next to Curtiss JN-4 Airplane, 1920; Aviator Beckwith Havens Standing by Ely-Curtiss Model D Headed Pusher at 1911 Texas State Fair; and radio evangelist J.C. Bishop’s Bishop Tabernacle, ca. 1940s-1950s.

26 items from the the Hervey A. Priddy Collection of American Presidential and Political Memorabilia, including political and/or campaign-related items from elections spanning 1840-2004. Items include tokens, medalets, badges, and buttons. Unusual items include a Ku Klux Klan token, a William McKinley matchbox, a “Let’s Pull Together” badge that shows Uncle Sam pulling against Hitler, Hervey Priddy campaign buttons for Highland Park ISD, and a paper clipping of James Garfield and Chester Arthur.

3 contract drawings of New York Bridges, including Drawings accompanying report on the design and construction of the Queensboro Bridge, 1908; Contract drawings for the improvement of the Manhattan Plaza of the Manhattan Bridge, 1912; and Contract drawings for the improvement of the Brooklyn Plaza of the Manhattan Bridge, 1913.

6 cartes de visite, ca. 1865-1868, from Early Texas Town Views showing Brownsville and Belton. The photographs show Levee Street, a pontoon bridge, and a man with a mule. One photograph shows Belton, Texas storefronts before they burned down on September 27, 1879.

Album 3, containing 75 photographs, and Album 4, containing 87 photographs, 1911-1915, of Hardinge Bridge Construction, India. These two volumes are part of a set of 11 albums documenting the construction of Hardinge Bridge over the lower Ganges River at Sara, India (now Paksey, Bangladesh) on the Dhaka-Kolkata railway line.

77 items from the Calvin D. Kingman Collection of Western Photographs have been uploaded to three different CUL collections, by location: 4 items in the Mexico: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints collection, all of which are taken in Paso del Norte, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico; 14 items in the Texas: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints collection, primarily set in El Paso, TX, and attributed to Francis Parker; and 58 items in the U.S. West: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints collection, primarily set in Las Vegas, NM, including the Montezuma Hotel and the local hot springs region.

40 real photographic postcards, ca. 1910s-1920s, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on the Mexican Revolution. Photographs show Federal and revolutionary leaders, including Diaz, Madero, Huerta, Carranza, Obregon, Villa, and Zapata, as well as battle sites, executions, street scenes, and locations throughout Mexico and on the U.S. border during the 10-year conflict.
