#TBT… One Night for Dallas

On April 13, Engage Dallas, along with the Office of Social Change and Intercultural Engagement (SCIE) co-hosted the inaugural One Night for Dallas community partner reception. This reception honored the collective work of SMU service organizations, faculty and staff members, and community partners who work together throughout the year to make a positive impact and create sustainable change in the Dallas community. In attendance were students affiliated with Engage Dallas, The Big Event, and Mustang Heroes, SMU faculty and staff members, and community organizations.

Attendees enjoyed dinner and dialogue and heard remarks from our very own Jennifer “JJ” Jones, Executive Director for Student Development and Director of SCIE, as well as Dr. K.C. Mmeje, Vice President for Student Affairs.  

We also honored students, staff, faculty, and community partners who have done outstanding work this year. Award categories and winners below:

 

Do Good for Dallas award winner, Jonathan Liu.

Do Good for Dallas – Vikas Bobba, Lilly Chapman, and Jonathan Liu

This award is presented to three first- or second-year students who engaged in service for the 2021-2022 school year. These students are rising stars within their residential community or service organization and demonstrated leadership qualities that has benefited both SMU and Dallas.

 

Outstanding Student Director award winner, Kirk Thomas.

This award is provided to an Engage Dallas Student Director who has gone above and beyond through planning service projects and educating their commons on the importance of their social problem and the impact of serving. 

 

Outstanding Student Leader award winner, Connor Healy.

This award recognizes one student leader from Mustang Heroes, The Big Event, or Alternative Breaks who has dedicated their time to serving their community and serves as a leader to their peers and organization members.

Outstanding Faculty/Staff – Daniele Forlino

This award highlights one faculty or staff member who supports students in planning or leading service projects throughout the year. Additionally, this recipient serves as an advocate and connector between SMU service organizations and the greater SMU student population. 

 

Outstanding Community Partner – Legacy Senior Communities and Rebuilding Together North Texas 
This award honors two community partners who have actively participated in SMU’s service programs during the 2021-2022 school year and work closely to create engaging service opportunities for students.

Engage Dallas coordinator full-time position posted on SMU staff career portal until Oct 22

Southern Methodist University is actively pursuing candidates who demonstrate a passion for building relationships, positivity, and a can-do attitude. Our Service House Residential Community Director/Engage Dallas Coordinator (application close date of October 22) opening with a January 2022 start date is now available online.

This is a dual role that provides supervision to the SMU Service House and the place-based community engagement initiative, Engage Dallas. The Residential Community Director of SMU Service House, a community of 28 students with a focus on community service, provides leadership to develop and sustain a positive residential community within the house.  Additionally, the SMUSH RCD is responsible for successfully accomplishing all administrative functions required in managing a university residential community.  As the Coordinator for Engage Dallas, the RCD leads campus-wide community engagement opportunities via the Engage Dallas initiative, including but not limited to supervising a minimum of 11 student directors.

Preferred qualifications include: a master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related field (earned prior to official start date) and previous residence life or community engagement experience. Additional desired qualifications include experience in a Residential College setting or experience working with academic and faculty partners; work experience in related community-building Student Affairs areas; and experience supervising student staff.

This is a 12-month, live-in position.

Compensation: Our total compensation package is valued at approximately $65,100; and this includes an annual salary of $40,000; partially furnished apartment, local phone, cable, wireless and ethernet connection; an annual professional development allowance; up to $400 for relocating costs; $2,300 meal allowance; and full University benefits (health, tuition, retirement within University guidelines).

Engage Dallas aims to help students connect their in-class learning, leadership skills, and personal values to advocate for and alleviate community needs.

There is an opportunity for every faculty and staff member to partner with our students and connect their course content or personal values to a community need. There are many ways that this can be done. We invite you to check out the brief video below and learn about some of the engagement opportunities.
