Kori Nelson Reflects on Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture Internship

Kori Nelson’s Reflection:

My experience as an intern at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture has delightfully developed my intellectual and professional skillset in many facets. I was hired as an editorial intern and collaborated closely with the illustrious Dr. Gail Thomas, aiding in the completion of her book on city planning and cultural psychology through research, archiving, and refining. This endeavor aligned with my passion for writing, and often I found myself applying, in a professional setting, what I have learned at SMU as an English major.

The experience deepened my education, illuminated my capabilities, and developed methods that will be utilized in my own work as a writer. In addition to editorial work, I was honored to have worked in the event planning and management process for the Sue Rose Summer Institute, a development program for public school teachers in which they receive free graduate school credit and a stipend after an intensive literary program. The planning and execution of this program was a rewarding experience, as it was an incredible blend of the humanities, community development, and fun.

Being an intern at the Dallas Institute has been an honor, not just because of my deepened confidence as a writer and coordinator, but because the work of the Institute gives back to the city of Dallas so generously and humbly.
