SMU power outage

[11:33 a.m.] Open status for various campus units below:

  • Umphrey Lee and Arnold Dining Halls are open. Mac’s Place is open.
  • The Market at Hughes-Trigg and Sushic are open.
  • Dedman Rec is open.
  • The SMU Child Care Center is open.
  • Fondren Library, Hamon Arts Library, Business Library, DeGolyer Library and Underwood Law Library are all open now. Bridwell Theology Library will open at 12:30 p.m.
  • Starbucks in Fondren Library will open later this afternoon as staffing allows.

[9:08 a.m.] Power has been restored to campus. All classes will resume as of 12:30 p.m. as regularly scheduled. Faculty and staff should report to campus to resume instruction and work.

Some buildings may not be fully functional immediately. For instance, card reader access is being reset as quickly as possible. Buildings in which fire alarms were triggered are being checked and reopened.


[8:35 a.m.] SMU Advisory! As power is restored, the reconnection has triggered fire alarms in some buildings. Please evacuate immediately if inside. Fire crews are responding.


[7:20 a.m.] SMU Advisory! All morning classes through noon are canceled. Classes and business operations are canceled during the power outage but will resume as soon as possible.

 A decision on afternoon classes will be made by 10 a.m. Employees should not report to work unless instructed otherwise by their direct supervisor until power is restored. Watch for updates and more information on SMU Aware.


[6:46 a.m.] SMU Alert! Classes and business operations are cancelled until power is restored. Students and employees should not come to campus until further notice


[5:57 a.m.] An arc in an Oncor transformer off campus overnight has caused a wide-spread outage impacting most campus buildings. Crews are working to restore full power as soon as possible.

Breakfast in the campus dining facilities is delayed. Yogurt cups, fruit and granola will be available outside Arnold and Lee Dining Halls as of 7 a.m. for those on a meal plan. Watch for updates.
