Honor a student

This year, as part of The Second Century Celebration, SMU is commemorating the Year of the Student, since this is the 100th anniversary of SMU’s inaugural class. In September 1915, the University welcomed 456 students to the Hilltop. Today, more than 11,000 students are shaping their futures as SMU students.

There are many ways to honor students during the Year of the Student:

Share Your Memories

SMU invites alumni and students to share your most meaningful experience from your time as an SMU student. Selected memories may be featured on this website, at SMU’s Centennial Hall and in SMU publications.

BrickCommemorate Student Impact With a Centennial Paver

By making a special $100 gift, you can recognize your favorite student with an etched paver on SMU’s Centennial Promenade, to be constructed on Ownby Drive for the 100th anniversary of SMU’s opening in 2015.

Make A Gift of Any Size

Consider making a gift of any size to SMU in support of student scholarships. For information about other opportunities to honor students, please contact an SMU Development Officer.

Give an Endowed Scholarship

Endowments created through The Second Century Campaign provide permanent funding for scholarships, faculty positions, research opportunities, academic programs and facilities.

Bright students bring vitality and energy to every aspect of campus and academic life, enriching the quality of the classroom experience, inspiring their peers, challenging their professors and contributing to a university’s academic reputation. SMU seeks to increase scholarships for students with inquisitive and creative minds who will learn, grow and contribute to communities in Texas and around the world. Endowing scholarships in support of undergraduate and graduate students is central to this goal.

In 2013–14 SMU achieved a major milestone of progress in its continuing rise by surpassing its goal of creating 500 scholarships during The Second Century Campaign, reaching a total of 501. These scholarships significantly impact the rising quality of SMU’s undergraduate student body. The range of merit-based scholarships offered by SMU has broadened to include general University scholarships as well as those that support specific studies, majors and interests.

SMU has created new opportunities to support the rise in student quality, including special Centennial Scholarships. These scholarships may be used to recognize and reward academic achievement or to extend opportunities to students who exhibit great promise.
