Project Mentors

Joan Gosnell, University Archivist

Joan Gosnell served as the beloved Southern Methodist University Archivist between 2004 and 2024. Using her history degree from Juniata College, her MA in history from the College of William and Mary, and her MS in Library from the University of North Texas, she organized the university records and connected people with the materials they need. Helping students learn about history of SMU was one of her passions. VOSMU wouldn’t exist if she hadn’t said yes!

Dr. Jill Kelly, Associate Professor & Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor

Dr. Kelly got her start in oral history as an undergraduate research assistant on a project on the history of coal mining in western Pennsylvania. She employs oral history methods as part of her research in South Africa–from her undergraduate senior thesis through her current book project on women in the 1950s. She enjoys mentoring the research assistants on Voices.

He began his journey in digital archives while he obtained his bachelor’s in Studio Art at the University of North Texas, working on the Kempner Project in the Digital Projects lab. He provides support on the post-interview side of Voices: maintaining records and project files, completing descriptive metadata, and acting as a communication bridge between the research assistants and nCDS.
