Taking readers for a journey along China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s signature foreign-policy vision, Jonathan E. Hillman warns in his new book, The Emperor’s New Road, that China is repeating the mistakes of previous great powers and reveals the perils of Beijing’s global push toward the center of everything. During this session, Hillman will discuss the BRI’s global impacts since its announcement in 2013, how this grand vision is adapting in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, and what to watch going forward.
Jonathan Hillman is a senior fellow with the CSIS Economics Program and director of the Reconnecting Asia Project, one of the most extensive open-source databases tracking China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
