Dr. Heather J. Sharkey, Professor in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania, spoke on how the Ottoman Empire ruled large parts of the Middle East for centuries until its collapse following defeat in World War I. Across most of its existence, Ottoman imperial authorities applied distinctive policies towards Muslim and non-Muslim religious groups – policies that it inherited and adapted from earlier Islamic empires.
