The DFW chapter of AIGA, the nation’s largest professional design organization, has announced that Willie Baronet, visiting executive-in-residence at the Temerlin Advertising Institute, will receive the 2013 AIGA Fellow Award, the highest honor bestowed by an AIGA chapter upon one of its members. The award honors senior-level members who have made “a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within their local or regional design community,” and takes into account their work in education,

“Our chapter is honored to present the Fellow Award to not just one, but two members who have helped build the foundation for great design in Dallas-Fort Worth,” says Gus Granger, chair of the 2013 Fellow Award Celebration, AIGA DFW president and principal and founder of 70kft. “They have not only built a great name for themselves and their companies, but they have greatly influenced many of the design leaders of our community today, and continue to do so. They’re a major part of our community’s footprint in design, both regionally and nationally.”

The event happens once a year at different agencies in Dallas allowing for relationships between the Institute and Dallas professionals to be formed and to grow stronger. According to Dr. Steven M. Agency professionals typically spend the morning presenting the background of the agency, their vision and work as well as discussing any challenges facing the business. This time is followed by breakout sessions to examine trends and opportunities. After a nice lunch at a local restaurant it is back to work with faculty brainstorming on the year ahead and planning for enhancements to curriculum and other value adding initiatives from workshops to high profile sponsored events.

Visiting Executive-in-Residence Professor Willie Baronet has been buying and collecting signs made by homeless people for the past 20 years. While this started off as a hobby, he now uses his purchases as artwork to “talk about the concept of home”.

Baronet owned his own advertising firm for 16 years before selling it in 2006, when he decided to go to graduate school at UTD for an MFA in arts and technology. In 2009, he had his first solo art show featuring the signs he purchased from the homeless at Hal Samples Gallery in Deep Ellum.

“It felt like I was coming home,” he says. “For me, art—artistic expression and creativity—that’s where I’ve always felt safe.”

Baronet currently teaches several classes for the Temerlin Advertising Institute, including Introduction to Creativity, Word & Image and Portfolio. He encourages his students to discover their own hobbies and creative passions.
