Visiting Executive-in-Residence Professor Willie Baronet has been buying and collecting signs made by homeless people for the past 20 years. While this started off as a hobby, he now uses his purchases as artwork to “talk about the concept of home”.
Baronet owned his own advertising firm for 16 years before selling it in 2006, when he decided to go to graduate school at UTD for an MFA in arts and technology. In 2009, he had his first solo art show featuring the signs he purchased from the homeless at Hal Samples Gallery in Deep Ellum.
“It felt like I was coming home,” he says. “For me, art—artistic expression and creativity—that’s where I’ve always felt safe.”
Baronet currently teaches several classes for the Temerlin Advertising Institute, including Introduction to Creativity, Word & Image and Portfolio. He encourages his students to discover their own hobbies and creative passions.

Eight Temerlin Advertising Institute (TAI) graduate students spent three weeks in Hong Kong this summer to study advertising in another culture. The program was led by TAI faculty members Dr. Carrie La Ferle, Director of Graduate Studies and Professor, and Dr. Steve Edwards, Director and Professor. All first-year Master’s students took part in this global immersion experience, which was designed to expand industry knowledge and refine cultural sensitivities in a dynamic foreign market.
Students completed an international advertising class, taught by Dr. Carrie La Ferle, during their stay and participated in a number of agency visits and cultural tours to further leverage their coursework. They attended presentations by industry experts at top agencies, including Mindshare, Publicis, Omninom Group Inc. and Create Hong Kong. Other cultural highlights included hiking in the surrounding mountains, dining at local restaurants, and spending a weekend in Macau.
The Temerlin Advertising Institute offers one of the only MA in Advertising programs with a built in global immersion experience. Established in 2009, the Master of Arts in Advertising program in the Temerlin Advertising Institute at SMU incorporates theory and practice from every major discipline within advertising and filters it through the lens of social and corporate responsibility. The leaders coming out of TAI recognize their responsibility to their brands, their consumers, their industry and their society.
SMU advertising major Paul Curry will join 23 other designated All-Stars from around the world in August to compete in a special Art Directors Club challenge to create the best advertising campaign for Ford Motor Company.
Curry, a senior at the Temerlin Advertising Institute in SMU Meadow’s School of the Arts, won a slot in the competition and was named an All-Star on May 23 at the regional “Portfolio Night/Dallas.”
“This is the next generation of young creatives,” says Curry. “I look forward to working with them and I’m going to work hard when I’m there.”
Portfolio Night was founded in 2002 by ihaveanidea and is presented by the New York-based Art Directors Club. The event is held annually in multiple cities around the world on the same night. The Dallas Portfolio Night has been hosted by SMU Meadows’ Temerlin Advertising Institute (TAI) for the past two years; this year’s Dallas event partner was TM Advertising.
“Any time you get an opportunity like this you have to treat it like it’s your big break,” Curry says. “I’m going into it with full expectations that I – and my team – can win.”
A camera crew will shoot the entire week of the competition and post webisodes on the Portfolio Night website.
“We will be watching back in Dallas to see the exploits of a hometown hero,” says Steven Edwards, director of the Temerlin Advertising Institute. “Paul represents the best TAI has to offer and we are glad his work will be showcased in the global competition.”
Curry built his portfolio with knowledge gained at SMU in classes such as Concepting and Art Direction Studio. His student projects include campaigns for Texas Instruments and Sherwin-Williams Paint.

TAI senior creative advertising student, Monika Hoang, received a Silver Pencil for her “Guantanamo by the Numbers” infographic during The Yong Ones awards on Tuesday, May 7. The Young Ones awards is part of The One Show, which takes place each May in New York, New York.
The One Show is considered one of the most prestigious awards shows in advertising, and its coveted Pencil award has been the ultimate achievement in many creatives’ careers. Every year, a panel of 30 creatives from around the world gather for a week and judge nearly 20,000 entries in categories including print, television, billboards and radio. Only the best of the best make the cut—Gold, Silver and Bronze Pencils are given out to fewer than 100 entries every year.
Ms. Hoang was also recognized for two other pieces of work, “The Global Refugee Crisis” and “Comparing Values,” which she received merits for.

The 2012 national ADDY Awards show will take place at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona on June 8, 2013 in conjunction with The American Advertising Federation (AAF) National Conference, ADMERICA!.
The ADDY Awards is the world’s largest advertising competition, receiving over 50,000 entries annually. As a final project for the Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship class, three teams of TAI graduate students, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Sidharth Muralidharan, had to create a sound and cost effective advertising campaign proposal for The Book Doctor with the primary emphasis on brand awareness through social responsibility.
The Book Doctoris a local Dallas business located in the Bishop Arts District and for fifteen years have provided custom bookbinding, book restoration, and book and bible repair services to customers nationwide. Their work has been featured in local Dallas publications and more recently in TheNew York Times.
Candice McKay, owner of The Book Doctor, and her team judged the presentations and the team of Chrystalla Georghiou, Hanna Lewin, and Jessica Miller, or ‘GLM’ were selected as the winner. After discussing with the client, Dr. Sid reports that, “GLM really listened to what the client had to say and their proposed strategy and creative appealed to The Book Doctor. The client could also foresee it resonating with their key demographics.” Mckay was very impressed and pleased with GLM’s proposal but adds that each team’s proposals had their own set of unique ideas which they are excited to implement in the near future.
