SMU students, Katie Ogden (graduate student), Monika Hoang (senior), and Nicole Hodges (senior) will have their work shown at the 9th Annual National Student Show sponsored by the Dallas Society of Visual Communications (DVSC).
Katie entered in the category of Graduate Student Work with creative campaigns for Food Truck Park, Pile, and the Boston Philharmonic. Monika submitted her work in the categories of Environmental Designs (campaigns for The Global Refugee Crisis and Guantanamo by the Numbers), Packaging (Better Halves), and finally Print Advertising – General (Ducolax). Nicole is also featured in the Print Advertising – General category with her work for Crayola.
The conference (April 11-13, 2013) features industry keynote speakers, workshops, panel discussions, a job fair, and a portfolio review by leading industry professionals.

Want to major or minor in advertising? We will be offering three On-Site Applications this week, March 21 – 23, for qualified students. You are eligible to register if you have taken or are taking:

You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in these four courses, as well as a cumulative SMU GPA of 2.5 or better, to be qualified to sit for the application. Additionally, you must have completed or will complete, by the end of the Spring 2013 term, at least 30 hours.

Karissa Jobman is the Spring 2013 recipient of two major awards namely the IES Abroad Leadership and Community Involvement Scholarship and the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
IES Abroad Leadership and Community Involvement Scholarship is open to students in any major who have demonstrated leadership and/or commitment in such areas as social service, student government, politics, or community development/welfare. The scholarship covers the cost of a student’s overseas study with the IES Abroad Buenos Aires – Latin American Societies and Cultures program for Spring 2013. The IES Abroad Merit-Based Scholarship program is very competitive. In this term alone, approximately 500 applicants competing in 20 different scholarship categories were received and only 12% of applicants received an award.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is funded through the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 and is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. During the Spring 2013 application cycle, the Gilman Scholarship Program reviewed more than 2,600 applications for just over 1,000 awards.
The Temerlin Advertising Institute would like to welcome Dr. Marc Weinberger to SMU! Dr. Weinberger joins Temerlin as an in-residence visiting research faculty member for the duration of the Spring 2013 semester.
Advertising scholar and professor of marketing, Dr. Weinberger comes to us from the Department of Marketing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he served as professor and associate dean for faculty affairs and research in the Isenberg School of Management. He was attracted to SMU because of the accomplished faculty in the department and Temerlin’s strong reputation and leadership. While only here at SMU for the spring, he hopes to share his research, meet new people and collaborate on new projects.
His research and teaching interests include marketing communication, humor in advertising and negative publicity. Specifically, he is working on humor-appeal projects, measuring the impact of advertising and publicity effects, reputation management and the effects of negative information in the marketplace.
Dr. Weinberger received both a bachelor’s degree and M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts. He holds a doctorate in marketing from Arizona State University. His research and teaching experience has spanned over thirty years and we are proud to have him join the TAI team!
Art director Christy Parrott and copywriter Jordan Spencer, along with graduate student art director Alex Jarzemsky, undergraduate art director Jena Jessen, and copywriter Haley Gatewood, will have their work featured in CMYK Magazine’s Top 100 New Creatives issue,which is set to be released in Spring 2013. The Top 100 New Creatives #56 is a worldwide portfolio contest sponsored by CMYK Magazine. Applicants compete in five categories including art direction, copywriting, illustration, graphic design and photography. A jury of industry professionals reviews the work. Congratulations to the Temerlin Advertising Institute students for their hard work and receiving this prestigious honor.

Andrea Barreto was selected as a finalist and Kevin Do was chosen for the Honor Roll for the AAF Most Promising Minority Student program. The AAF’s Most Promising Minority Student Program (MPMS) has given hundreds of exceptional multicultural college seniors the opportunity to launch their careers in advertising by putting them in direct contact with the industry’s top advertisers, media companies, and advertising agencies. Finalists have been invited to attend the program in New York City on Feb. 4-6, 2013.
