Catch Up with Second Year MA in Advertising Students about their Executive Internships with Dallas Agencies

In the final semester of the Temerlin Advertising Institute’s MA in Advertising program, students work in an executive internship with a Dallas advertising agency. Read their stories below and see what they’re up to!

ChrystallaChrystalla Georghiou –  TM Advertising

I joined the Media team this semester at TM Advertising. I assist with several projects for American Airlines, Japan Airlines, Dex Media and PG&E, just to name a few. I am a Texan by birth and have spent much of my life traveling the world with my parents. My travels have taken me to places such as Nicosia, Cyprus and Doha, and Qatar. In my spare time, I enjoy knitting, reading and crafting. I am thrilled to be at TM, where I am looking forward to learning more about planning campaigns that incorporate different media types that reach an advertiser’s core audience. I hope to expand my knowledge in the ever-so-evolving Media space. I am super excited to be undertaking my Executive Internship at TM this Spring!

HannaHanna Lewin – TM Advertising

I am interning this semester in the Account Management department at TM. I work closely with a number of corporations including Captain D’s, Community Coffee, PG&E, and Universal Orlando. I am looking forward to learning the ins and outs of everyday agency life and how to develop strong working relationships with both my team and clients.

JonJon Cronson – Agency Entourage

I am the newest graduate intern at the digital marketing agency, Agency Entourage, located in downtown Dallas, TX. I joined both the account and social media departments. I already feel like I am learning a lot and even making an impact for my team. One of the first projects I was given to tackle was to evaluate how AE acquires new accounts. I have also been hard at work optimizing the on-boarding process. I further took on reorganizing how clients’ information is kept and stored to fully utilize AE’s collective brain power. I am excited for what comes next.

LyndsayLyndsay Pleas – The Marketing Arm

I work at The Marketing Arm as an Account Service and Promotions intern on the Frito-Lay account, specifically as part of the “Do Us A Flavor” program which is in its second year. It’s the biggest program Lay’s has ever run and has become the most successful program at Frito-Lay based on consumer engagement.  I specifically coordinate the submissions effort of Do Us A Flavor, including: filtering, totaling, and sorting the millions of flavor submissions.  I work with the Lay’s brand team to help manage the backend database tool for the program.  I also assist the Lay’s brand team with flavor recommendations.  I am looking forward to learning more about the R&D process for Lay’s Potato Chips – specifically how new flavors of Lay’s are proposed, created, developed and put on shelves.  I am so grateful to have the opportunity to intern at The Marketing Arm and gain firsthand experience working in the world of advertising and marketing.

TAI Students Support Dallas LOVE Project

BroadrickChandlerThe Dallas LOVE Project, organized in 2013 by 29 Pieces founder and Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Karen Blessen, called for local artists and schoolchildren to create 18-by-18-inch paintings and drawings conveying messages of love and positivity. Ten thousand pieces in all were created by 20,000 artists, some of whom were students in Temerlin Advertising Institute’s Visiting Executive-in-Residence Willie Baronet’s “Introduction to Creativity” class.

Junior advertising student Chandler Broadrick (Advertising/Creative Track, with minors in journalism and graphic design) participated in Baronet’s class and says the Dallas LOVE Project gave her the chance to engage the community on a large scale, while reflecting Dallas in a positive light to the world. Using art in this way really impacts the way we feel towards one another,” she says. Sophomore advertising Tien Dang also took part in this unique project, and drew her inspiration from former president John F. Kennedy.

Tuesday November 12, 2013 TAI hosted the Exxon Mobil Lecture Series with Publicis Dallas Advertising Agency at the Angelika. A documentary developed by Publicis Dallas was presented which focused on the 1-in-3 Americans who are just making it paycheck to paycheck. Kelly Gomez of Publicis Dallas and a former graduate of TAI’s BA and MA programs in Advertising was involved in the making of the documentary. The goal of the night was to learn about this growing group of Americans and try to understand how to serve them with products that are worthy of their business. According to Dr. La Ferle, a professor in the Temerlin Advertising Institute, “Each dollar is hard to come by for this group but yet they still need to buy products. The audience began to consider how to serve this group by adding value to brands to make each dollar spent go a little further.”

The night kicked off with many old and new friends and students of the Temerlin Advertising Institute mingling. Previous graduates of the program such as Aubrey Flanigan, Alexandra Watson and AdeDoyin Adebiyi showed up to give their support. Many faculty members came out for the event along with several team members from Publicis Dallas and other agencies in town.

Sally Kennedy, CEO of Publicis Dallas introduced the documentary. Following the film, a panel made of up Rosalyn Rawitscher, VP and Group Planning Director at Publicis Dallas and Steve McGehee, SVP and Group Account Director discussed the creation of the documentary and the implementation of the work to help clients such as CiCi’s better position their brands to this consumer group. Dr. Carrie La Ferle also spoke on the panel highlighting how advertisers can use this informative information to build stronger relationships between consumers and brands by speaking to consumers where they are and with the needs they are currently experiencing.

Dr. Steve Edwards, Director of the Temerlin Advertising Institute, who organized the night said “The research and documentary by Publicis Dallas was a great opportunity to share this with our current students, our alumni working in industry and the Dallas advertising community at large.” He went on to say “TAI believes that advertising is a tool that can be used to enhance brands and build relationships with consumers while also providing for positive outcomes in society. We are believers in our slogan, Better Advertising. Better World and this documentary was just another opportunity to present new ways to consider harnessing the positive power that advertising can bring to consumers, brands and society.”

The Temerlin Advertising Institute welcomed Shon Rathbone of Publicis Dallas to speak as a part of their monthly Brown Bag meetings. Shon spoke about modern storytelling and how advertising can use this form of interactive storytelling to their advantage. Specifically, Shon pointed towards role-playing style video games and their ability to draw the viewer into the experience by allowing them to make decisions that influences how the story unfolds. Shon believes that by making an advertisement interactive, the audience will feel more engaged with the product and the ad. Marketers can engage viewers through various online content, such as YouTube videos or websites, to continue the story beyond the advertisement itself. The possibilities are endless, and Shon stressed the importance of teaching young advertising students the potential of interactive storytelling.

Over the years, his work as been recognized by nearly every national and international awards show including Cannes, One Show, Communication Arts and Effie.

The Temerlin Advertising Institute Brown Bag meetings take place once a month during the academic year. Each meeting features one to two speakers that share their expertise in the advertising industry. These speakers have included TAI faculty, Communication Studies faculty, visiting professors, and Dallas Ft. Worth area advertising and communication professionals. TAI Creative Advertising Students Graduate from Paper School

photoOn Wednesday, October 22, students in Willie Baronet’s Creative Advertising Portfolio class attended Clampitt Paper’s Clampitt University Paper School. The two hour session provided students with an overview of all aspects of the paper business: how it’s made, the various weights and grades and finishes, and how to specify paper for a print job. Industry veterans Don Clampitt and John Hampton both presented to the class, after which they had a chance to explore the Clampitt Sample Room and Creative Center where they could take printed samples back with them for reference. Each student received a diploma for having attended the Paper School.

Founded in Dallas in 1941, Clampitt Paper is a paper merchant that sells direct to large and small scale printers as well as creative designers and local merchants. Their Creative Center, located in their Dallas headquarters, offers a comfortable environment for researching modern paper and print solutions, networking with graphic arts professionals and meeting clients. The Creative Center hosts several events for Dallas-area professionals and students each month, including the Paper School.

The Temerlin Advertising Institute’s Creative Program prepares students for careers in art direction and copywriting. Many of our alumni have gone on to work as Creative Directors for advertising agencies, corporations and design firms. Understanding the paper business and how it relates to brand design and development is one of many skills students in the Temerlin Advertising Institute’s Creative Program acquire during their time in the program. Such skills prepare them to be leaders in the industry.
