Rethinking Pink: TAI Students Place Fourth Overall, Win Best Promotional Strategy for Client Mary Kay at District National Student Advertising Competition

2014 SMU NSAC AwardThe National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) team from SMU competed in the American Advertising Federation (AAF) District 10 regional competition in Austin, Texas on April 17. They placed fourth overall and took home the Best Promotional Strategy trophy in what turned out to be a pressure filled, highly competitive event. The SMU NASC team, taught by Brice Campbell, Executive-in-Residence, and Willie Baronet, Visiting Executive-in-Residence, has been hard at work since the beginning of the Spring 2014 semester when they began doing preliminary research and strategy development for Mary Kay, this year’s national client. Using the tagline #RETHINKPINK, the team created a cohesive and memorable campaign designed to change the perception of Mary Kay among young women 18-25 years old. Students focused their efforts in Account Management, Account Planning, Traditional and Social Media, Research, Promotions, Public, and Creative (including casting and photographing the women featured in the ads), producing a comprehensive campaign executed solely by them.

Willie Baronet reflected on the experience, stating, “as a first time faculty in this competition I was overwhelmed by the amount of work required of the students. And impressed by the opportunities they had to present in front of industry leaders, as well as members of the Mary Kay marketing team.” All members of the 2014 SMU NSAC team are pursuing a BA in Advertising from the Temerlin Advertising Institute (TAI). Advertising majors are required to complete ADV 4399 Advertising Campaigns as part of their curriculum. This class combines major advertising theories with practice, allowing students to develop and present an advertising campaign to a real client based on current advertising challenges that the client is facing. Students that take Advertising Campaigns during the Spring semester have the opportunity to participate in the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). Recent NSAC clients include Glidden Paint (2013) and JCPenney (2012).

Please join the Temerlin Advertising Institute (TAI) in congratulating this year’s SMU NSAC team on their outstanding work and accomplishments!

Custom Art Work on the bus by SMU Students

Leah Foster, a friend of TAI Visiting Executive-in-Residence Willie Baronet, started a National Bus Tour this past weekend at the Dallas Art Fair and several students in Baronet’s Introduction to Creativity class showed up to participate. Using paint, glitter, paper and all the many materials that Willie brought, the students got to work in redecorating the bus.

Leah Foster is an artist and currently a graduate student at School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, NY. She views art as a tool to bring positive change in the world. She launched this bus tour with a doctor from Botswana in an effort to raise money to start a children’s hospital. This tour is a way for the Leah and her collaborative partner Una Mulale to meet people and begin a conversation about their  approach to healthcare, collaborative process, and the children’s conference they are planning in Botswana in November of 2014. They also see the bus as a space to open authentic conversation about race, gender, and equality. To read more about her project, click here.

Mackenzie Keck, an advertising/creative major with a double minor in film and graphic design, said she was thrilled to have won both a gold and Student Best of Show. “I am especially honored because there were so many outstanding student entries this year,” she said. “The creative program at SMU Temerlin has helped me so much – it provides well rounded training that most other schools don’t have. It lets us get an undergraduate degree and develop our portfolios at the same time.”

TAI Faculty Encourage Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet Students to Pursue Advertising

Professors Lecture at ISDA group of 4th, 5th and 6th graders were visiting SMU from the Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet school to learn about Communication related studies on Thursday February 27, 2014. Faculty members from The Temerlin Advertising Institute prepared a 45 minute interactive presentation to teach these future leaders about the industry of advertising, branding and what factors need to be considered to make effective advertisements.

Willie Baronet Speaking at ISDSpecifically, Professor Sid Muralidharan gave an overview of the advertising industry, definitions of what advertising does and the key players in the industry.

Professor Willie Baronet spoke about what advertising agencies do and the creative process. He provided the crowd with some memorable ads illustrating the importance of making a connection with consumers.

Speaking about what goes into making a ‘good’ ad, Professor Carrie La Ferle discussed the importance of considering target audience and media selection as well as desired associations between the brand and images presented in the advertisement. She also discussed how ads can do more than sell products; they can be used to voice a positive social message as well.

Dr. Edwards ended the session with a Q&A that kept the panel on their toes as well as preaching the TAI slogan of Better Advertising. Better World.

Upon leaving, the faculty members got to engage in a group photo while conveying to these bright students how much they were looking forward to seeing them in 7 years at SMU for their college experience.

Catching Up with More Second Year MA in Advertising Students about their Executive Internships with Dallas Agencies

Two more MA in Advertising students at the Temerlin Advertising Institute share their experiences at their executive internships with a Dallas advertising agency. Enjoy!

Sara Seaton – Firehouse Agency

Sara SeatonIn January, I started interning at Firehouse Agency. I joined the social media team, which technically falls under the planning division of the agency. The accounts I work on include Nothing Bundt Cakes, Blackmon Mooring, and Long Cove, a luxury lakeside development. Sometimes I’m pulled onto other accounts, like Service King and National Cheerleading Association, to help with other social media needs. Primarily, I help write and schedule branded social media content, monitor social platforms, and analyze campaign results. I’m currently working on a Pinterest project for Nothing Bundt Cakes, which requires me to flex my creative-problem solving muscle. I’m excited to see all of the spring social campaigns launch in the next couple of months. The results always uncover new insights into the overall social strategy behind a brand.

Arturo Lee – Buzzshift

Arturo LeeI am currently working at Buzzshift. I was hired on as a design/art director intern. Currently I have been working on the Verizon, Surface Armor, and AC Pro accounts. I have been immersed in work from day one and was already able to develop some of the creative that Verizon will use at SXSW. For example, I was able to make the invitations to the Verizon exclusive Big Boi concert. As the weeks move ahead, I am really looking to hone my skills and get even better at certain programs, while also growing as a presenter in order to secure more interaction with the client.

TAI Lecturer Dev Gupta to Speak at TEDxSMU

TEDxSMU Weekly Discussion Series
Poster designed by TAI Creative student Irisa Ona

The TEDxSMU Young Fellows are hosting a weekly talk series around TEDTalks. This week’s talk will be hosted by students from Meadows School of the Arts at SMU and will feature Temerlin Advertising Institute Lecturer Dev Gupta and Engineering Professor Kate Canales.

Dev Gupta teaches creative advertising art direction and copywriting, and will be talking about how design isn’t the same thing as art. According to Gupta, “Most people think because you can draw you can design a logo or website, when in fact art and design sit on opposite ends of the same spectrum.”

This week’s TEDxSMU weekly talk will be on Thursday, February 27th at 5pm in Greer Garson Room 3531. All members of SMU and Dallas communities are invited to participate! For more information on the event, please visit their Facebook page.
