Position Summary:
Trinity River Audubon Center seeks experienced kayakers to lead groups on our River Adventures Programs. These guides will educate participants on the ecology of the area and instruct on techniques to safely maneuver the Trinity River and other local bodies of water in kayaks as well as on rafts. These positons are part-time with an expectation of approximately 18 hours per week during peak river season (fall, spring and summer). River Adventure programming will be offered primarily, but not limited to, weekends with times varying with the season as well as once monthly for rafting trips.
Essential Functions:
• Using governmental sources and weather predictions to determine safety of river conditions for programming.
• Instruct participants on techniques to navigate on the river.
• Ensure safety of participants and equipment during programs. Includes overview of safety protocols, personal flotation devices and other training.
• Cleaning and storage of equipment used for the program.
• Following established protocols and program parameters
• Driving van and attached trailer to/from put-in and take-out points.
• Educating participants on the ecology of the Trinity River Watershed and associated conservation messages, particularly messaging connected to areas of Audubon’s strategic plan for Coastal, Water, and Bird Friendly Communities.
Qualifications and Experience:
• Extensive kayak, canoe, and/or rafting experience required
• Knowledge of kayak/canoe safety procedures
• Strong swimming skill required
• Ability to lead a group and deliver educational talks
• Swift Water Rescue Training desired but not required
• Preference will be given to candidates who hold certifications in boating or water rescue activities
• Ability to transport kayaks onto rack systems. Must poses a valid driver’s license
