PAVED WITH PRIDE

Join us in celebrating SMU’s centennial by making a $100 gift to purchase a brick paver. Your etched brick paver will be installed in a pedestrian mall in SMU’s new centennial quad, which will be constructed on the east side of campus behind the Blanton Student Services Building.

Through your support you will leave a lasting legacy for future SMU generations. We hope you will join us as we celebrate the promise of SMU’s next 100 years.

Alpha Chi Omega is so excited about Homecoming 2011!  We are so happy to show off our SMU Pride and create an amazing float, banner and Peruna for the community to see! This semester we’ve been working hard on Alpha Chi Couture, our annual philanthropy, which has raised $100,000+ in the past five years for Genesis Women’s Shelter.  Happy Homecoming!

The SMU Tri Delta’s have been as busy as ever, having hosted two philanthropy events, Tri Fit and Delta Diner, within the first months of school. We have already raised thousands of dollars for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and have many more charity events ahead. Monday Night Football is in its second year and has been a great social event. The Delta girls received the highest overall GPA honor this year…again! We’re proud to be able to balance work and fun and our boat party in September was amazing! We’re looking forward to more philanthropy, sisterhood, and social events ahead and hope to see you there!

The ladies of Delta Gamma have been working hard this past semester to give back to the community, build sisterhood, and have a strong presence on campus. After a record-setting $25,000 was raised from Anchor Splash in April, we’ve continued to supported our philanthropy, Service for Sight, through additional fundraising events, Desserts and Gelato and Nacho Average Night. Our members volunteer at vision screenings and collect books on tape to donate to Reading and Radio Resource Center. The DG’s love spending time together by participating in intramural sports, other sorority and fraternity events, and our chapter-wide sisterhood retreats. This semester, we’ve fostered that sisterly bond by painting pottery and enjoying a frozen yogurt party with our entire chapter. With over 10 girls studying abroad, we’ve also had the amazing experience of feeling our Delta Gamma bond from all over the world. Our girls are particularly excited to enjoy the homecoming festivities, show our love for our candidate, and be a part of the NPHC homecoming step show.

The SMU Student Senate is continuing it’s commitment to serve the student body by meeting increasing tuition and fees with a greater number of more substantial scholarships.  Each year, the Senate gives out over $50,000 worth of scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students from all backgrounds.  The Senate Scholarship effort is funded by the SMU Student Senate Endowment, a grouping of 3 separate endowments made possible by many generous donors.  This unique student-to-student scholarship opportunity is attracting a greater number of applicants each year, and can only continue to grow with the generous donations from the SMU community.  Please help reward and support your classmates and friends by giving to the SMU Student Senate Scholarship Endowment.

Between planning three successful philanthropy events, maintaining their position of third in grades, and participating in two social events with other chapters, Theta has been extremely busy this semester! Theta Late Night raised over $3,400.00 for Dallas CASA with record-breaking attendance. Trick or Treat with Theta, a philanthropy and recruitment event, provided freshman girls the opportunity to get to know Thetas in a casual setting- all while raising money for CASA. Theta 5K, Theta’s signature philanthropy event, is taking place on November 5th, and is expected to raise an additional $10,000.00 for CASA. Theta is very excited for a Roman homecoming, and hopes to Krown Kragen this year!

You may be asking why the Union uses the tag-line “Students Helping Students”? Well…when you make your gift back to SMU, you can choose any area of campus to contribute your $$$$, allowing you to make a difference to students.

Each day during the Homecoming Giving Challenge we will be highlighting a different participating student organization. Showing the great things these organizations (you can support with your gift) are doing!

Homecoming Highlight #1

Pi Beta Phi’s philanthropy is First Book, promoting literacy and book donations. Pi Phi has been working very hard this semester to promote literacy. Pi Phi will use three events to achieve this goal, Phi Dye, Mr. University and Phight Night. Phi Dye occurred in October, where students tie dyed t-shirts! Mr. University is a male pageant with contestants participating in a formal wear, athletic wear and talent portions. Pi Phi will wrap up the year with Phight Night, a self-defense class promoting wellness and risk management! All events are open to all SMU students, so please join us in promoting literacy!

Homecoming Giving Challenge

#smustudentshelpingstudents

Dear SMU students,

The Union is an organization of student leaders that promotes class unity and supports the direction of SMU through class giving initiatives. This week, October 31- November 4, we are hosting our annual Homecoming Challenge with the purpose of increasing student giving by fostering an atmosphere of friendly competition between SMU’s undergraduate communities involved in Homecoming. We are asking for your help.

The goal of this Challenge is for each organization participating in Homecoming to have the highest percentage of his or her respective organization make a gift to SMU.  Individuals can give by visiting the Union’s website at www.smu.edu/theunion or find our Union members at tables located at float building. Whichever organization has the highest percentage of their members give to SMU will receive a matching gift for the total amount they’ve raised up to $1,000.  The check will be presented to the winning organization on November 5th at 12:30 p.m. at the Red, Blue and You tent, which will be located near the Flag Pole on the day of Homecoming.

Why should you give?  That’s a good question.  It’s a way for you to show your vote of confidence in SMU and invest in the value of your degree.  Considering tuition only covers approximately 70% of your experience at SMU, the 30% that comes from gifts is up to you and alumni.  Make a difference in your time here at SMU.  After all, you’re only in college once and I’m sure you want to see the difference made while you’re still here.

If you wish to have further information you may contact Stephanie Brown, Union President, at stephanieb@smu.edu or Austin Prentice, Student Body President, at aprentice@smu.edu.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Pony Up,

Stephanie Brown                                            Austin Prentice
Union President, Class of 2012                      Student Body President, 2011-2012

John Angle

During John Angle’s sophomore year in high school, he came to tour SMU because he wanted a mid-sized school in a city. He immediately fell in love with the beautiful campus, friendly people, strong academics and great quality of life.

Because of SMU’s scholarship fund, John decided to attend SMU and he wouldn’t have to worry about the financial stress. He says the gifts to SMU have allowed him “to have a much fuller college experience.” Not only is he a double major in Accounting and History with a minor in Spanish, but he is heavily involved on campus through Student Foundation, Sigma Phi Epsilon, The Union, Delta Sigma Pi, just to name a few.

The scholarship fund has given John the opportunity to intern in the Office of George W. Bush, attend the first game at the new Cowboys Stadium, meet astronauts, and meet a Supreme Court justice and so many more inspiring people. He says the one person he’s met at SMU who has had the biggest impact on him is his Middle East History Professor, Sabri Ates.   These admirable individuals are the reason John has decided he wants to be a tenured history professor at SMU, the CFO of a Fortune 1000 company, or a US Senator.

He believes that these gifts allow students like him to have the best college experience in the world and attract and high level of talent to both SMU and Dallas. Gifts to the SMU Scholarship Fund make an impact on students like John. Make your gift today at http://smu.edu/giving/classgiving.
