Horses, healing and high-fives

Erica is a senior majoring in psychology and sociology in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. She was awarded a Maguire and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Fellowship for summer 2014 from the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility at SMU to intern at ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship in McKinney, Texas. Erica plans to focus on fundraising, grants and event planning, while also volunteering in the nonprofit's lesson program.

Understanding the problem

My first meeting with the clients This afternoon we had our first meeting with our client, the League of Women Voters. During the discussion, I began to realize the nature of the problem. The new regulation defines "ID" as: Texas Department of Public Safety issued driver's license or personal ID card, a concealed carry license, an election identification certificate, or a U.S. government issued passport, military ID, citizenship or naturalization certificate. There exist people in resource-poor situations who do not drive, do not carry ID and do not know how to register to vote.
