Clues that it is a phishing message:

  • Email is not using one of the OIT templates.
  • The “Validate Email Account” link is for a “.com” URL.
  • The email is pressuring with its sense of urgency.
  • We will NEVER ask you to retain an account by clicking a link in an email.

Thank you for visiting The Bait Shop. On this site, you will find some examples of current phishing emails sent to the SMU campus community. The more recent examples are at the top. 

If you get a suspicious email but don’t find it here, DO NOT assume it is safe. There are many variants of each phishing email with new ones appearing daily. SMU receives over 500 million emails a year. If you have any concerns, please contact the IT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP or at help@smu.edu.
