New Study Co-authored By SMU Archaeologist Shows Kennewick Man Related To Modern Native Americans
SMU archaeologist David Meltzer is co-author of a new study that shows the genome sequence of the 8,500-year-old male skeleton known as Kennewick Man is closely related to modern Native Americans. The new research may help resolve a bitter dispute between Native Americans and scientists who believed that the skeleton – found along the banks of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington, in 1996 – was not of Native American ancestry.
