Dear
Mustang family,
As we enter 2026, we’re reflecting on what an amazing year 2025 was for the Hilltop. In June, we welcomed our new president, Jay Hartzell, and celebrated his inauguration in September. We also welcomed our new executive vice president and provost Rachel Mersey, director of Athletics Damon Evans and several new deans into the Mustang family. Plus, our academic leaders paved the way for outstanding accomplishments in research, ranging on topics from from ancient DNA to digital twins and much more.
And did we mention how much excitement SMU Athletics has experienced lately? SMU football celebrated its first bowl win since 2012 against Arizona at the Holiday Bowl, and our men’s basketball team reached a ranking of No. 24 after their win over No. 12 UNC. Plus, men’s soccer defender Slade Starnes ’26 has signed a homegrown contract with FC Dallas.
Finally, in December, we welcomed a new class of Mustangs into the alumni family. We’re entering this new year with a deep appreciation for where we’ve been as well as a tangible excitement for what’s on the horizon. Thank you for being a part of this community.
Speaking of community, did you know that the best way for your students to keep in touch with the University is through SMU Network? It’s a hub for all things SMU and a great way to stay connected with peers, discover job postings, get exclusive news and events, jump into alumni groups and more. No matter where your student is on their Hilltop journey, we encourage them to use this fun and engaging tool to meet with fellow students, alumni and industry experts who’ve walked the same campus paths.
Happy new year,
Amy Thompson Associate Director, Parent and Volunteer Engagement Email: amythompson@smu.edu
