SMU Residence Life and Student Housing (RLSH) is pleased to announce a Summer 2022 construction improvement project in Virginia-Snider Commons. The project will cost an estimated $3 million, include interior and exterior work, and will wrap up before the Fall 2022 semester begins.
During Spring 2022, SMU became aware of moisture damage in the garden level of Virginia-Snider Commons, which prompted further investigation. This renovation will address the issues identified, include waterproofing and drainage upgrades to prevent further damage and enhance the facility’s facade.
Interior work will include sheetrock replacement in rooms throughout the garden level, new hardwood-style vinyl flooring in garden level residential rooms, and additional waterproofing enhancements. Based on previous assessments, there is no indication that other levels in Virginia-Snider have moisture damage, so this work will be focused on the garden level. However, during the course of this project and out of an abundance of caution, various upper-level areas will be assessed and air ducts throughout the building will be cleaned.
SMU knows that students and families rely on us to provide safe and healthy living environments, and we are committed to ensuring that we address all known moisture issues. We look forward to welcoming students back into this community in the Fall.
