How to Preach a Dangerous Sermon – keynote by

Rev. Frank Thomas

As the keynote speaker for the 2018 Arklatex Lectures in Preaching, Dr. Frank A. Thomas author, scholar and renowned preacher will offer insights from his new book How to Preach a Dangerous Sermon. The “dangerous sermon,” is one that refuses to reflect idolatrous, diabolical imaginings of our human future. Rather, it reshapes them, by activating the four qualities of moral imagination: the embodied presence of the preacher, empathy as a bridge between past injustice and future possibilities, wisdom found in ancient texts, and hope conveyed through artistic, poetic language. With reference to historical addresses and sermons by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Kenney, Prathia Hall and others, Dr. Thomas will demonstrate how contemporary preachers can incorporate the moral imagination into their own dangerous sermons!

Holy Boldness! The Four Virtues of the Prophetic Preacher – workshop by Dr. Alyce McKenzie

What are the qualities of the prophetic preacher that honor the pastoral role while not shying away from addressing crucial issues of the day? This workshop will draw on the Bible’s Wisdom Literature in identifying four virtues that inform sermons that offer both hope and challenge in our complex world.

Sermon Series vs. the Lectionary—A False Dichotomy – workshop by Dr. O. Wesley Allen, Jr.

Preachers often think they must choose between preaching texts from the Revised Common Lectionary following the liturgical year or preaching thematically-oriented sermon series. But they don’t have to choose. When one steps back and takes a wide-angle view of lectionary, numerous options for sermon series for each liturgical season can be found. In this workshop we especially explore lectionary series possibilities for Year C (Advent 2018-Pentecost 2019). Recommended book: O. Wesley Allen, Jr., Preaching and Reading the Lectionary: A Three Dimensional Approach to the Liturgical Year (Chalice Press, 2007).

Registration fee only $75!
