Description

The Community Outreach Fellowship is the highest honor offered by Embrey Human Rights Program. Community Outreach Fellows are SMU undergraduate and graduate students who defend and extend human rights within the local Dallas/Fort Worth community. They connect classroom learning to real world action by working with grass-roots organizations on specific issues related to justice and dignity.

Each year, five exceptionally promising SMU students target critical problems and implement innovative responses in the Dallas community. The 2017-2018 Community Outreach Fellows are hard at work on projects, such as: creating an immunization program for homeless youth at risk for preventable diseases; starting a community bail fund for indigent defendants in the criminal justice system; producing a narrative podcast series advocating for and raising awareness about refugees; and creating educational materials and programming for family and friends of survivors of sexual violence.

“Hearing Professor Rick Halperin talk so passionately about important issues made me see there was another world of learning opportunities out there, ones relevant to me pursuing a career in global health”.  2016-2017 Community Outreach Fellow, Dominque Earland ’17
