Reporting to: Editor, D Magazine
Schedule & compensation: Fifteen hours per week for ten weeks (Monday, June 2 through Friday, August 8, 2025.) $20 per hour (paid in four equal installments throughout the summer via SMU Payroll.)
Format: In-person at D’s downtown Dallas headquarters (750 N. St. Paul Street, 2100, Dallas, Texas, 75201)
Preferred majors: Majors in Journalism and/or Fashion Media are preferred candidates.
Organization’s mission: Connect our audience with the people, places, and events that matter.
Position overview: If glossy magazines give you a thrill, this is the internship for you. D Magazine editorial interns are smart, reliable, detail-oriented, talented, and curious. We’re looking for good writers and reporters who aren’t afraid to pick up the phone. You’ll discover the glamorous (and sometimes not-so-glamorous) side of publishing and gain tons of real-world magazine experience along the way.
Job description: Interns work closely with print staff to make every issue as perfect as possible, and primary responsibilities include fact-checking articles, covering local events, blogging, and attending editorial meetings. Especially successful candidates will have an interest in pitching and writing for the front of the book section. Our internship program is highly varied and we like to engage interns from different departments with one another. Our summer program includes a cohort project they will work on and we ask interns to volunteer to help with two events during their time here. Events can range from all publications and programs associated with each one. Exposure is key in understanding how our magazine company works in full circle.
We also require interns to attend workshops throughout the semester. They will have real hands-on engagement interviewing local CEOs, learning with Sales/Advertising executives, and about the new chapters everyone is talking about – AI.
Preferred skills: Basic journalistic knowledge and understanding of APA Writing Style. We prefer intern applicants who have already shown interest in journalism through their own blog, working with the school’s newspaper, or excellent writing examples.
Other notes: We ask for reliable transportation to help with story coverage and office attendance. Interns use their phones for recording interviews, but any camera equipment can be provided by us as needed. Use of a personal laptop is also required.
