As part of the District Leadership Fellows program, Dr. Bobbie Treviño, Superintendent of Zapata County ISD, is focused on increasing reading proficiency of all students in her district. This goal is key for her as she believes all students should have the opportunity to develop strong literacy skills to support academic success, critical thinking and lifelong learning, and that literacy is the foundation to all other learning.
As. Dr. Treviño began implementing her project, some key learnings emerged:
- Identifying a Wildly Important Goal to act as a singular focus unified the district work and energized stakeholders at every level.
- Utilizing a clear and measurable scoreboard allowed the district to visualize achievements, identify gaps and celebrate successes.
- Best practices from high performing campuses were replicated across the district respecting the unique contexts of each campus.
- Engaging key stakeholders fostered a sense of shared ownership and created a community-wide commitment to the literacy goal.
As Dr. Treviño approaches the end of the academic year, her project is gaining momentum and showing promising results. Campuses across the district have embraced the common literacy goal, and data indicates measurable growth in reading proficiency at multiple grade levels. Through consistent monitoring, collaboration, and the use of targeted strategies, Zapata County ISD is building a sustainable culture of literacy. Dr. Treviño’s leadership has not only aligned efforts districtwide but also empowered principals, teachers, and families to work collectively toward a shared vision of student success. The project has laid a strong foundation for continued progress in the coming year.
