We’ve just wrapped up three days of one of the most intense pieces of training in University history. In an unprecedented event, over a half dozen ATSDs, instructional designers, and specialists from around the University provided over 50 hours of live training covering general Canvas LMS usage, how to communicate with students using various online tools, tips and strategies of asynchronous and synchronous online teaching, and, of course, the essential features of Zoom. We recently encouraged the campus community to make plans to support the scenario where in-person courses must be moved online during an emergency or extended campus outage. We also want to encourage those working in more administrative and supportive roles to consider how they modify their work routines if needing to work remotely.
There are challenges to working remotely, from managing teams to staying focused. LinkedIn Learning has several videos for those new to working from home and managing those teams that do. As we monitor the situation surrounding COVID-19, SMU is implementing contingency plans in preparation for the possibility of disruptions. Above all, the SMU community will be vigilant and committed to preserving the learning and instructional process. We recognize the imperative to prevent or to mitigate learning interruptions for all students, and are especially mindful of the experience of those students scheduled to graduate at the conclusion of this semester. To that end, SMU will ensure that online course delivery technologies and support resources are available to all faculty for immediate use in the event that on-campus attendance is impeded at any point in the future.
