Our latest edition of the OIT Quarterly Security Update is now available to the SMU community. SMU Phone Replacement Project: Upgrading campus infrastructure and telephones

OIT has launched a project to replace the current campus telephone system in service for the last 25 years.

The current phone system has served the SMU Dallas and SMU Plano campus locations since the early 90’s, but it does not support SMU-in-Taos. Although the system is historically reliable and stable, it has become costly due to the steady rise in annual support and maintenance expenses. End of support for Java impacts AdminImages Firefox Users

FirefoxLike Chrome before it, Firefox has ended support for NPAPI, impacting plugins for Java, Silverlight, and other similar NPAPI-based plugins. Beginning with Firefox v52, released in March of 2017, plug-in support is now limited to Adobe Flash. This lack of support will impact users of AdminImages on campus. Electrical Service Shutdown to Impact Networking on March 31.

SMU Buildings and Roads has circulated a notice that electrical service will be shut off to several buildings as a part of campus construction activities. The shutdown will begin on Friday, March 31, 2017, starting approximately 11 p.m. The shutdowns will be in three phases and will affect electricity, networking, and lighting within the building and the surrounding area. Each of the three outages is expected to last 90 minutes. Offices in these buildings should remember to shut down computers and printers before the electrical service being shut off. Exchange 2016 Mailbox Migrations Begin Next Week

Exchange 2016Starting on March 27, 2017, OIT will begin moving Exchange 2010 mailboxes to our new Exchange 2016 system. Most of the changes will occur behind the scenes and should have a little noticeable impact on email service.  Users of webmail will have noticed the updated experience that was implemented in January to the Outlook web client. These changes will allow for better collaboration, improved search, and of course, that improved Outlook web experience for all web browsers.
