Dr. Jennifer Culver is an Academic Technology Service Director for the Simmons School of Education and Human Development here at SMU. An Academic Technology Service Director (ATSD) serves as the liaison between academics and the Office of Information Technology, ensuring that faculty and student’s technology needs are met. I recently sat down with Dr. Culver to probe her on a recent trip she took with Dr. Robert Hunt, where she was able to share her passion for technology use within the classroom throughout the Phillippines. Before a computer is deployed on campus, a team of specialists track it, verify the configuration, installs the latest standard computer load, and much more before it gets to you. The several hundred computer upgrades on campus are handled mostly by this small team with over a hundred years of experience at SMU. They are more than just computer installs. The Client Systems Team is also responsible for campus computer inventory, software upgrades with Ivanti, many of the campus computer labs, plus providing support for those spaces.

The Office of Information Technology’s Classroom and AV Support Team is eager to serve the needs of our campus community. The individuals are trained and certified in designing and programming AV solutions for the classroom, as well as possess years of experience with live events. The team oversaw over 4,000 requests for AV support at events last school year and performed over 40 classroom updates in the summer alone, with another 28 to be completed this coming summer. They are the ones that rush to your office when technology issue arise. They diagnose and resolve software/hardware related incidents and support various departmental applications. The Desktop Support team provides IT support for all students, faculty, and staff. They assist with both Windows/Mac platforms and any other IT related issues the campus community may encounter.
