New Blue Light Phones Installed to Further Secure Our Campus

icon of a blue lightIn keeping our commitment to safety for every Mustang, a recent project involved the testing, repair, replacement, and new installations of our “blue light” emergency telephones. These devices are a critical part of our safety and security infrastructure, allowing anyone on campus to quickly contact emergency services with the push of a button.

Many of our blue light phones were recently reaching the end of their serviceable lives due to water intrusion and corrosion, so seven new phones were installed to ensure reliable service. These new pedestals are also inline with ADA Standards for Accessible Design with a large, easy-to-access red button for all on campus. When pressed, the blue light at the top begins blinking and a strobe light is activated along with sending the exact location to SMUPD.

When you’re on campus, always make note of where these phones are located and keep it in the back of your mind. If you or anyone else is in danger and you may not have your cell phone, these devices can be a literal lifesaver. Call boxes are also available on all elevators.
