Tolltag Readers Upgraded

Updated Your TollTag? We’ve Upgraded Our Readers

SMU NTTA TollTagDid you know that entry into SMU parking centers using your TollTag is a preferred alternative to entrance with an SMU ID Card? The NTTA recently upgraded TollTags to the new 6C protocol—an open-standard communications protocol for passive UHF RFID tags—and in response, we’ve updated our toll readers across campus. If you’ve recently replaced your toll tag, there’s an important step you might have missed – I know I did.

This semester, upgrades were made at key locations, including Binkley Parking, the M Lot near the Perkins Administration Building, Moody Parking Center, and the remaining surface lots on campus. In total, all gated surface lots (8 total) and parking centers, except the Daniel Law lot, which is exempt, have TollTag access.

Until I learned about the upgrades and remembered I received a new TollTag, I forgot about the essential step needed to regain seamless entry in the morning.

Enrolling or Updating Your TollTag in the Parking System

When you update your TollTag, you must return to the SMU portal to enter your new tag number.  Here’s what you’ll need to do once you receive a new TollTag to get those gates to automatically lift again.

  1. Log into the parking portal page, idcard.smu.edu, to manage your toll tag.
  2. Have your new Tolltag number ready for entry.
  3. Update your information in the system.

If you’re unsure what to do or have questions about your account, you can contact SMU Parking at idcard@smu.edu or visit them in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

Why This Matters

Our upgraded readers are designed to work with the new NTTA TollTags, but they won’t detect your vehicle unless your tag is up-to-date in the system. Making a quick update in the parking portal ensures seamless entry into campus lots without delays.
