Last year, the Integration Services team transitioned SMU from its previous open-source platform for building applications. The challenge? Cost restraints. The solution? Webframe—a new tool built on Lowcoder that allows teams across campus to automate processes, manage data more effectively, and collaborate more efficiently.
After extensive testing of several platforms over the course of a year, Lowcoder was selected for its affordability, robust features, customer service, and ease of installation. Webframe, powered by Lowcoder, is already making an impact.
How SMU is Using Webframe
Administrative Efficiency
The Lyle School of Engineering recently turned to Webframe to streamline the ePAF process for student worker information. Faculty now submit required details via a Webframe form, reducing errors and saving time. Automated email reminders ensure nothing slips through the cracks.
Academic Applications
Webframe has simplified student enrollment for placement exams through an app integrated with Canvas. Students fill out a form and are now auto-enrolled into the placement exams Canvas course. This ensures students are prepared for key exams, like those for foreign language or chemistry requirements. It’s also being used to manage certifications and grades for the Microsoft Office Specialist program.
Career Center Support
The Hegi Family Career Development Center tapped into Webframe to create an app for managing major translations between PeopleSoft and the Career Center’s platforms, ensuring accurate tracking and reporting.
IT Solutions for SMU DataArts
Bob Louderback, Director of Technology for SMU DataArts initially explored Webframe to develop a portal that would replace a decade-old web application used to collect and distribute data. However, after working with the SMU instance, it became clear that due to its installation and permission setup, it couldn’t support external users.
As a result, Bob installed Webframe on a standalone AWS server, configuring permissions to allow broader access. The team is now developing a portal, set to launch in a trial phase in Q4 2025, which will integrate with third-party applications like Alchemer surveys and the Snowflake data warehouse. “I’m really happy to see this all come together. Replacing our outdated web application will save several thousand dollars in hosting and upkeep costs and simplify and modernize the maintenance of surveys and data gathering, storage, and dissemination,” shared Bob.
