Planning to upgrade your phone or get a new one as a gift this holiday season? Don’t forget one critical step: transferring your Duo multi-factor authentication account to your new device. Without a proper transfer, you could end up being locked out of SMU apps and services. Don’t worry—the process is straightforward, and we’re here to help you plan ahead to ensure a smooth transition when returning to campus. Here is how to get started:
- Download Duo Mobile on Your New Phone
Start by installing the Duo Mobile app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) on your new phone. Make sure the app is fully installed before moving on. - Enroll a New Device in Duo
- Navigate to https://smu.edu/duoenroll and authenticate using your SMU credentials. Approve the Duo Push on your old device.
- The Duo device management portal will list the authentication methods currently connected to your account. Delete your old phone from the list, then select “Add a new device” and follow the prompts.
- Once prompted, scan the provided QR code in the Duo Mobile app on your new phone to connect it to your SMU account.
- Verify Your Account
Once the restoration is complete, test your Duo account by logging into a service that requires MFA (such as Canvas or my.SMU) to ensure that the transfer was successful.
Important Considerations
- Don’t Reset Your Old Phone Too Soon: You’ll need your current device for verification during the transfer. Make sure everything is set up on your new phone before wiping or recycling your old one.
- Create a Duo Restore Backup: Ensure that Duo Restore is enabled on your new device to ensure that your account can be recovered in case of accident, theft, etc.
