Updated Restart Requirements for SMU-Owned Macs

computer check iconTo maintain optimal performance and security for our Mac computers on campus, we are implementing an updated restart policy in our device management platform, Jamf. Regularly restarting your computer is essential for keeping the operating system up to date, resolving memory issues, and ensuring that applications run smoothly.

Here’s an overview of the new policy!

Restart Every 28 Days

All Mac computers are required to restart at least once every 28 days. After this period, you will receive a prompt asking you to restart your machine.
To provide flexibility, you have the option to defer this restart up to five times. This means if you receive the prompt on a Monday, you can choose to delay the restart until Saturday. After five deferrals, however, the restart becomes mandatory.

Restart Prompt Details

When the 28-day mark is reached, a prompt will appear on your screen with a 10-minute timer for you to make a selection. The prompt window will remain on top of all other applications to ensure you see it.

You can either choose to restart immediately, which will trigger a timer, or defer the restart. Each deferral will be followed by a notification indicating how many deferrals remain.

Automatic Deferral for No Response

If no action is taken within the 10-minute window, the system will automatically defer the restart and use one of the available deferrals. You will receive a reminder when the next deferral period ends.

When Deferrals Run Out

After all five deferrals have been used, the next prompt will no longer offer a “Remind me tomorrow” option. At this point, a 2-hour countdown will begin, and the system will automatically restart once the timer reaches zero.
Alternatively, you can manually confirm the restart at any time during the countdown, which will trigger a shorter 3-minute restart timer.

Voluntary Restart

You can also initiate a restart manually via the Apple menu at any time. This will reset the 28-day countdown and ensure your system remains up to date.

Importance of Regular Restarts

Regularly restarting your computer helps prevent technical issues and ensures that software updates are applied promptly. This practice improves both the security and performance of your system, helping you avoid potential disruptions in your daily work.
