Driving Change: Priyanka Nigam’s Role in the Transition to a New HSA Vendor

a circle with an HSA form in the cutout. In the dynamic landscape of university benefits administration, behind-the-scenes heroes like Priyanka Nigam often go unnoticed, yet their contributions are pivotal in ensuring smooth transitions and efficient operations. A fitting example of this is the recent change of Health Savings Account vendors at SMU. BenefitWallet resigned as custodian over the HSA accounts and HealthEquity became the new vendor. As a result, Priyanka was entrusted with this project, and to work with others in the HR Benefits team in February to begin the transition, which was complete in May.

She initiated discussions with vendors, addressing crucial questions and concerns regarding the transfer of files containing payroll deductions and participant data. Leveraging existing resources, Priyanka facilitated direct communication between HealthEquity and Blue Cross Blue Shield, streamlining the acquisition of essential files and saving valuable time. With a clear roadmap in place, Priyanka and others in Benefits delved into the development and testing phases. Over three weeks of development and two weeks of rigorous testing, they ensured seamless integration with SMU’s payroll system. Despite a brief blackout period for HSA card usage, communication efforts mitigated confusion, underscoring the importance of proactive engagement with all affected audiences.

Reflecting on SMU’s HSA plan, Priyanka highlights its significance as a safety net for current and future healthcare expenses. Exclusively available to benefits eligible employees who elect one of the high deductible health plans, the HSA offers triple tax savings when you opt to make contributions. It also has an integrated investment platform that empowers members to grow their HSA funds affordably. While around 27% of SMU’s benefit-eligible employees participate in the plan, there is room for growth, and she encourages eligible employees to consider how they may benefit.

We appreciate Priyanka and others in the Benefits department for their dedication, expertise, and resilience. Behind every seamless transition lies countless hours of meticulous planning and execution, ensuring continuity and efficiency in service delivery.
