Authentication Changes to Email Services

EmailFollowing guidance from our Email service provider, SMU is modernizing our login process and plans to complete this modernization by October 28, 2022. While we have worked to notify all affected individuals in advance via email communications and calls from the IT Help Desk, we’d like to summarize what is happening in case you have any issues.

To continue accessing SMU Email services, you must select and use an email client that supports the new process on all devices where you wish to use SMU Email service. Absent a supported email client, you can use webmail.smu.edu to connect to your mailbox before and after the change.

Even if you already use one of the supported email clients, a configuration change may be required to begin using our new login process. Instructions for Email configuration can be found at smu.edu/OIT/Services/Email/StudentConfiguration for students and smu.edu/OIT/Services/Email/FacStaffConfiguration for employees. The SMU IT Help Desk is available to assist you with the required configuration changes.

Email clients supported for Modern Authentication at SMU:

  • Outlook 2019 or newer (Windows and macOS)
  • Outlook for Mobile (iOS and Android)
  • macOS Mail app, Mojave 10.14 and newer
  • iOS Mail app, 11.3.1 and newer
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 78 or later, with Owl (Linux and Windows)

Both macOS and iOS mail apps may require you to remove and re-add your mail account. Please contact the IT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP (4357) or help@smu.edu if assistance is needed.
