MediaArchive.SMU Retires February 28, 2022

MediaBankThe University’s digital asset management system, MediaBank—also known as MediaArchive.SMU, will be retired on Monday, February 28, 2022. MediaBank was designed to store and index a large volume of graphic images and video files and offered metadata functionality, automatic rendering of images, and security roles offering images either for private or public use. Primarily used by the SMU Libraries and Development & External Affairs, other departments experimented with the system for asset management before we had other enterprise storage system solutions. With the advancements in cloud storage for the University and other solutions available, we are allowing MediaBank to retire. We will decommission the service at the end of February.

We’re asking all MediaBank users to examine any files stored in the MediaBank repository before February 28, 2022, and to transfer any needed assets to one of our enterprise cloud storage solutions. We recommend Box. While this might appear to be a challenging undertaking, our initial reports suggest that the majority of the MediaBank assets might be dated and have outlived their usefulness. If you find anything your department wishes to keep, please download it and transfer your department’s folder in Box. Documentation for Searching and Downloading Assets from the MediaArchive Web Portal is available on Wiki.SMU.

As always, if you need assistance, feel free to reach out to the IT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP (4357) or email help@smu.edu.
