Beautiful day on the SMU campus.

Incoming Students: Tech Essentials for Living on Campus

As you start to move in and begin your life as a Mustang, we would like to help you adjust to your life on campus with a few important IT-related tips and resources related to life on campus.

Securely Connect to the SMU Networks

SMU WirelessThere are several options for connecting to the SMU campus network once you are on campus. To securely connect your computer or mobile device wirelessly, choose the PerunaNet Wi-Fi network, and log in using your SMU ID and password. Of course, the wired network will provide the best performance and security.

Please Note: Wireless printers and certain smart devices, such as voice-activated assistants, smart TVs, and gaming consoles, will need to be registered and connect to SMU_Guest. In addition, personal routers are not permitted on any SMU networks and will be disconnect from the network once detected.

Also, if the wireless goes down in your room, please call 214-768-HELP. We can fix it, but only if we know about it.

You can find out more about the campus wireless networks at smu.edu/wifi.

Protecting Your Passwords

New Password? Update it on all devices.Don’t share your password with anyone. Your password is set to expire every 12 months… More often, if you accidentally share it.

We highly recommend you enroll in the Password Reset Tool. It will allow you to change or reset your password 24/7. You can even unlock your account at 2 a.m., just hours before that paper is due. To enroll, just go to smu.edu/password.

Printing

Papercut logoPersonal printers cannot be connected to the SMU wireless network, so bring the USB cable for your “wireless” printer.

Also, SMU provides managed printers across campus using the pay-to-print system called PaperCut. To print, you can email your document to the printer, then release the job when you are at the printer. For detailed instructions on printing, please visit smu.edu/printing.

Learning with the Canvas LMS

Canvas LMSYou should be aware that SMU uses the Canvas Learning Management System, which you will be asked to use as part of your coursework. Canvas provides access to grades, your syllabus, plus integrates with a number of popular tools such as Zoom and Panopto. You can find out more at smu.edu/Canvas.
